Our dog is 10weeks old and needs a microchip, does anyone know what age they can have one from and how much approx they cost? Thanks

Best to ask your vet as they vary a bit and some vets have them on special offer several times a year. We had our first done at 4 months but it's a big needle and chose to have all the others done when they were neutered at about 6-8 months under anesthetic.

My last kitten was done at 13 weeks, so I suspect a puppy could be done equally young. It cost around £22.

It obviously varies greatly then, next door had her kitten done at 4 months for £9.99 - so worth asking around if anyone has a promotion on. I think some dog charities do it free at certain times too.

It can be done at any age.
While doing it at the same time as neutering means it can be done under general anaethetic it also means you are banking on not needing the protection of the chip before that and accidents can happen in terms of pets getting lost.
Most are done without anaethetic without any problem.
Near me it costs about £25

I had a couple of my kittens chipped when neutered, but the others were all done on a routine vet visit with no anaesthetic, and as Tass says it was absolutely fine. The needle may look big but the chip is only the size of a grain of rice. I guess it's like having your ears pierced ISTR our vets has 'microchipping weeks' when it is done half price, but you may have to wait several months for that to come round, £20-25 seems the norm otherwise.

Yes you are right about the risk, we do it at our own risk but seeing a chihuahua have that needle was something I couldn't do and we felt the same for all our others afterwards. My failing I guess I am just a coward with needles but we are careful owners and have never lost one yet.

Our cat has been micro-chipped but she was done before I had her so all we had to do was swap the address over.

Poppy has had her first and second vaccinations, just needs her third, her microchip and her rabies jab done, which I'm gonna take her for at the end of May, is it ok to do it all in one day? x

It can and should be done as early as realistically possible, as it gives your dog some protection in the event it is lost or stolen.

Mine are all done at 8 weeks, my last litter were all done at 7 weeks before they left - it doesn't hurt - a click, a treat and it's forgotten about

Don't take the chance of delaying it

We had our puppy Holly chipped at the same appointment as her second vaccinations aged 10 weeks.

Like people have said, the needle is quite big. If anyone works in fashion retail, the "gun" our vet used looked like the one we use to put price tags on clothes at work

I think I was more upset about it than Holly was. She gave a little yelp when it went in, and there was a bit of blood. She then sulked for a bit afterwards, and we couldn't stroke around the area where the chip was until the next day, but she didn't seemed to be traumatized by it at all.

As for cost, we paid for a special deal in companion care (pets at home) that included the first two vaccinations, microchip, 4 weeks free petplan insurance, some free food and some vouchers. It was around £50 I think.
