In stuff magazine they have the Yamada DVR800 (DVD+R, DVDRW for £200 )
they give it a really good write up so they would seem to be good budget players.

I do!

I bought a Yamada DVDSlim5520 around Christmas time and was very impressed with it, it has an excellent specification, connectivity is great and it plays almost anything.

However there were two things that I didn't like:

I have a Bush TV/VCR combination that it only produces a CVBS picture on, which is inferior in picture quality to RGB.

The player produces an RGB on every other TV I have tried, from an ancient Daewoo to a brand new Pacific Widescreen, this obviously points the finger at the TV, it's just unlucky for me (and maybe other TV/VCR combi owners). It is still watchable however, and will certianly suffice until I get a new TV.

Another thing was that connected up to my 5.1 speakers (they only have analogue inputs for subwoofer, centre, surround left, surround right, front left and front right) (They are Yamada also.)) I found sound was working, but not the centre channel. I got really quiet, muffled voices.

So, I presumed the player was faulty and ordered another one (I couldn't send it back because I had opened it up and broken the seal on the back to see if it was anything obvious (I was thinking loose connection, dry joint to the output, but little did I know everything was circuit board mounted and so couldn't be changed without wrecking it.

Anyway I got the new player, connected it up, same problem.

I checked the connections, this time looking to see which letter the Yamada supplied, might I add leads said instead of just connecting red to red, white to white. Hey presto, both players then worked perfectly.

So with two players on my hands I retired my Acoustic Solutions player, replaced it with the Yamada and kept the new one for where it was originally going to be put.

I am really happy with both, I think (stress the think!) Yamada made a mistake on the back panel though so where the bass connection is is actually centre and centre is bass.

Both are very reliable and will play anything disc shaped it seems (and that includes VCDs, DVD+R, and even DVD+RW/-RW (I think, haven't tested)).

The manual is a bit pants at times. If it has been translated it has been translated well, but some items need more description. For example:

Menu option: Post DRC

"This is selected to adjust post dynamic range compression function to obtain the different compression results". In English please?!?!

Don't let the quote put you off though, the default settings will be fine in most cases and it is simple enough to work out anyway.

Hope this helps

I have Yamada 6600 which I have been generally happy with, except for a green tinge to RGB output.
