Like I never saw that coming . I thought he didn't have long to go when he had mysteriously turned into a co-presenter with Fearn, for no apparent reason, two or three weeks ago (haven't seen it since, so I don't know if that's continued).

Simon off Popworld would make a half decent TOTP presenter I think, although I'd miss his sarcasm on Popworld. I had a good laugh a fortnight ago, when he described Sam and Mark as like Wham, only with two Andrew Ridgelys. Anyone else a bit of a Popworld fan?

Yes, that is quite funny.

I've no opinion on Tim Kash as (surprisingly with my taste or lack of it in music ) I don't watch TOTP. But I do wonder if this is like shooting the messenger. OK, Kash might not be very good, but isn't the real truth that there just isn't the same interest in the charts anymore?

I think there's an interest in the charts, it's now just the case that it's thinly spread across lots of TV shows on lots of channels. An example of this is the forum, as it often seems to be the case that about a 3rd of the posts on here are about single releases - admittedly half of them are negative . To an extent I think it's been fashionable for a long while for people to say the charts are sh*te, and they're not interested in them. People have been saying it for at least the 80s at least.

You're right on the ratings of TOTP though, it certainly not all his fault that ratings have dropped, as I think the presenter probably isn't that significant for such a show. But at the same time I probably catch TOTP once a fortnight, and I want to see a presenter that doesn't annoy the crap out of me. He's not helping, and they can get someone better, that everyone doesn't take the p*ss out of.

Interesting points. I don't think there is quite as much interest in the charts as there was in the 80s or the mid-90s for instance (which is indicated by how much lower singles and album sales are now). Admittedly downloading and piracy is playing a part in reduced sales figures too, but I don't think it's the only reason.

I also think there is so much exposure now for pop artists on multifarious other shows and on the endless number of channels we have access to now that TOTP is bound to suffer from it, whoever the presenter is.

This might not be the case for everyone, but in my experience I hardly know anybody over the age of 20 who watches TOTP. Pop music has always been primarily for young people, but there don't seem to be that many artists and that much music that crosses the age and musical barriers and that manage to get in the charts now. It goes back to my first point. TOTP is only going to be as popular as the music that's on it.

Its only singles sales that have dropped (30% in 2003). Album sales were actually up by 7.6%. I guess this is due to people also realising that albums can be bougth for £9, and with singles at £3-£4 you may as well get the album unless you really want the alternative remix on the B-Side.

My source for this is an Ananova webpage dated 13th January, that I saved onto my HD for a uni project. Its no longer on the web due to Ananova now only having the top ten stories or whatever they do now...

It could also be argued (maybe wrongly, I don't thave all the numbers) that many people who download and find music they like, will then go out and buy the CD, more of a try before you buy service. Many people I know who have downloaded illegally wouldn't have bought the album anyway, so in some ways it is increasing awareness of bands.

And im wandering off topic.........

even if Tim Kash is replaced that won't improve the ratings unless they actually get some decent bands in.

But the point I was making was that they don't compare with sales in the 80s or mid-90s.
