Why would someone have a dog like that around a young child, or around at all for that matter?


I know people will reply with "but they are harmless really and you don't know what you're talking about". But I do not trust the nature of these dogs and NOBODY knows what a dog will do except the dog itself.

What a daft comment, the dog doesn't just wake up one day and decide to kill a child. If the dog was mistreated then it might, if it had been bred to be used as a weapon then it might, but other than that it's just a pet.

The dog could be blind or sick for all you know.

Why are you happy his dog has been stolen? Is it cos of the breed? (A Staffie) Any dog can attack a child, it's the owners at fault not the breed. Just because it's mainly rottweilers in the press doesn't mean that they're the only ones that attack or similiar breeds.

Possibly because it's assumed the type of people who would steal and flog motorbikes and scooters, would also steal these dogs too.

Any dog CAN attack a child, but if a crappy little terrier does it you can kick it in the head to get it off.

No so easy with this type of dog. Nor rottweilers.





I believe that you should not have powerful dogs around small children. And if you do, then you're bloody stupid.

I grew up around an Alsation, it did not attack me, nor did my friends dogs.

Someone's being watching too much TV news showing chavs making their Staffies fight each other. Well obviously dogs of any bread made to do that will likely be vicious. Nothing to do with the bread though.

Staffies get such a bad rap. Usually because of the ned brigade who are attracted to them because they think they look hard. Rescue centres are full of staffies because they've been abandoned or mistreated by neds who realise that they're actually pretty affectionate dogs and battering lumps out of them is the only way to make them aggressive. Unfortunately bull breeds have such strong jaws that when they do turn, they inflict far more damage than other breeds. Put them in the hands of inexperienced, uninterested, aggressive owners who see them as nothing more than a status symbol and you have a recipe for disaster.

There are far more bad owners than bad dogs. Speaking purely from my own experience on many a dog walk, I've met nippy terriers, sleekit collies, sweet akitas, cuddly mastiffs. There are good and bad dogs in every breed. In all honesty I've yet to meet a dodgy staffie. I know 3 rescue staffies who are the sweetest dogs, just happy to be in a loving home. One was nearly stolen a fortnight ago. Gypsies walked in the garden and when the woman I know asked what they were doing, they announced they were "taking your dog". She grabbed him, ran inside and locked up but they hung around for a good 20 minutes after that.

The tragic thing is, you can guarantee that anyone stealing a Staffie doesn't want a family pet. They want it for breeding purposes or to use as bait in dog fights. I don't understand how someone can state that this is "GOOD".

Bad dogs are rare, bad owners are sadly all too common. Blame the deed not the breed.

This is the reason I do not think they should be around children.



If you must have a dog around children, then have a weaker breed that you can control easier in case the worse does happen.

Anyway, since I've got all of your attention - anyone want to buy a child-friendly dog I've got for sale?

NO dog should be left unattended around small children. Wee ones are unintentionally rough on pets. Something as simple as standing on a paw, pulling a tail or falling off the couch and landing on the dog. It's just not worth the risk. I grew up with German Shepherds, my last dog was a Border Collie and I currently have a rescue lurcher. I train/work with my dog, but you just never know.

My friendly lurcher got attacked and bitten last week by a Border Collie. I don't claim all collies are aggressive.

My dog's the friendliest dog in the world, but I'd never leave her alone with children. Because I don't trust children.

If so, would it only be particular breeds you'd consider.
