I was attacked by my grandfather's labrador. I've never seen a staffie attack anyone.

Works both ways. Not all labs are lovely. Not all staffies are horrible, bloodthirsty beasts.

Sorry to hear you were attacked by a labrador but according to this forum that makes your grandfather a bad owner.

I never said all staffies were bloodthirsty beasts I am only going by my own experiences as you are.

He probably is a bad owner. He's bad grandfather anyway.

I didn't say you did But your post that was linked where you said any lab that attacks must be crossed with a staffie/pit bull was a bit ridiculous.

My grandfather's was a full pedigree yellow lab.

No, I didn't say that labs must be crossed with staffies/pitbulls because they attacked someone, just crossed, I have heard that lab/collie crosses can be aggressive but I don't know personally.
I have never known a lab to attack and I have known hundreds in my lifetime, I find it really hard to believe.

Why would someone have a dog like that around a young child, or around at all for that matter?

I know people will reply with "but they are harmless really and you don't know what you're talking about". But I do not trust the nature of these dogs and NOBODY knows what a dog will do except the dog itself. ”

its idiots like you who really get on my nerves.
tarnishing all dogs of a particular breed as nasty and dangerous is ridicolous.

I haven't changed my mind.

I still do not believe known powerful dogs should be kept around children (certainly not without being muzzled at the very least).

I do not trust these types of dogs and am very wary when I see them in the streets. They should certainly be muzzled when in public.

The person who posted the gumtree advert couldn;t have been that bothered about finding the dog as he never posted in Gumtree's Lost Pets section. (Either he is dim, or like I suggested he believes it was stolen by the of people who steal scooters and tries to flog them or their parts.)

Out of interest,...are you a dog owner?

There is a third possibility - that they'd simply placed the advert in the wrong section. A quick check on Gumtree using the word "stolen" shows that the advert appears in the Motorcycles and Scooters section, but also in Lost and Found here, placed on the same day.

No, I prefer cats. Although I don't own a cat as I have no inclination to look after it.

I also noticed that second ad yesterday, but he still never posted in the Pets section at all.

I've long lost interest in this thread anyway.

The point is, the advert was put in an appropriate section. By your own admission, you only saw the other advertisement day before yesterday, though it had been there several days. You were so quick to post something critical of the owners that you didn't bother checking. Not every dog owners is irresponsible, regardless of whether the dog is big or small, & you were far too quick to judge.

omg how heartless are you, that dog might have been taken for fighting. have you any idea how much children get attached to dogs and the family as a whole. any dog can attack most owners are responsible and dont take chances with their childrens lives

It wasn't put in the appropiate section as that section is for lost items. Lost pets is a seperate section.

It doesn't matter anyway as this is not what my original post was about.

As you appear to be more au fait with Gumtree than these people who've had their pet stolen, it would have been a good idea to ring them to let them know their mistake.

That much is true. Your original post was about

making the most of an opportunity to say a dog you don't know belonging to a family you don't know "would have probably the kid eventually", and

questioning why someone would have such a dog around a young child, when you don't know that the photo is of the child who lives with the dog as opposed to visiting. You don't know that the dog or the child are left unsupervised - even in the photos, the child & the dog aren't on their own together. How you had the temerity to write "He's better off without it" when you have no knowledge about how they look after the dog & what it means to them apart from what was said in the advert which gives the impression the dog is loved & much missed is beyond me.
Giving an opinion about what dogs you think are suitable for family living is one thing. Casting aspersions about a family & a dog based on a "lost animal" advert is quite another, and saying it was good that the dog had been stolen was nasty & unnecessary. You having "lost interest" in the thread doesn't change that.

Do you make the same assumptions about people from a picture as you do about animals ?

Animals tend to behave how they are trained to behave and behave badly if thats how they have been trained or if they have been mistreated, few dogs attack people if they have been brought up correctly , have been trained well and live in a loving caring home unless they have a mental behavioural problem which one would be able to pick up on quite quickly and act accordingly.

If I didn't want him to get his dog back, why would I advise him where to put his ad?

Even if the dog is supervised when the photo was taken, it doesn't stop it attacking or the owner (or anyone else) stopping the attack.

I don't care if my comments/thread are considered nasty and unnecessary, it's my opinion and I'm allowed to have it (just like you're allowed to not agree with it).

Bizarrely, I was attacked by a pedigree lab when I was a child, and only got over my subsequent fear of dogs when my neighbours got a collie/lab cross who was the most placid beast I have ever known.

I'm not claiming that makes ALL labs vicious, or ALL collie/lab crosses gentle, just those particular dogs. I don't think it's helpful to generalise about breeds in that way as so much depends on how the dog is treated, it's own personality etc etc

I've just realised I've overlooked a very important point.

How was the dog stolen in the first place?

I do hope it didn't happen because the dog had been let off it's lead in a public area.

I had.

But I felt my point above was important enough to bring it back.

Interesting to note that despite most of you being concerned about this dog, no one (it seems) has contacted the owner to find out if the dog was ever ruturned (or if he worked out how to turn caps lock off).
