We have got two 8 week old rabbits. The lion lop is very very fluffy. We weren't expecting him to be so fluffy.
I had made the cage ready with newspaper then wood shavings on top as we have done with a previous rabbit.
They seem very happy but the fluffy one has wood shavings sticking to him all the time. I suppose whatever he has in there will get caught in his fur.
Should I leave things as they are, or is there an alternative bedding.

Yep. I keep angoras - they're the fluffiest of fluffy bunnies.

Wood shavings are not safe for bunnies anyway. Some of them are positively poisonous. (Cedar is one).

We use a kiln dried wood pulp thing called Megazorb (horse bedding). It's around £8 a huge sack and that lasts me months with 2 buns (as it's super absorbent and not smelly). If you have to pay postage on it direct from the maker, it is dearer but you can see if a farm shop/livestock feed place has it in and if they don't most will order for it and bear the cost of postage for you. It's WAY cheaper than wood shavings and doesn't smell. Its other advantage is it can go straight on your garden - you don't need to leave it 6 months or so to age first - unlike wood shavings which are too acidic.

There may be other horse beddings that are safe, but I dunno them.

I keep my buns for their wool - which is sheared every now and then - so the quality of it is vital and I rarely find any Megazorb in there, and it doesn't get stuck or cause knots.

I first heard of it on a rabbit forum so know it's safe for bunnies.

Shavings are a nightmare for long haired rabbits. They get matted & knotted up very quickly causing discomfort & ultimately sores if not attended to. Shavings are just horrible anyway & as the above post says, some are toxic & some come from treated timber.

You will be forever clipping them anyway as hay will get in the fur like shavings do especially round their fluffy feet.

You don't need anything apart from newspaper in a cat litter tray with covered with hay changed daily with fresh paper & hay to avoid flies. Of course, some bunnies will sit & shred the paper all day. One of ours does when he gets bored or angry if we're late in letting them out.

We keep ours in big dog cages with a shelf in for them to sleep on. You can get hanging basket things (that you put plants in) & use them as hay baskets. We have carpet on the bottom as they only wee in the litter tray.

That's a good set up, RubusRoo. I never thought of the hanging basket thing! I tend to put hay on top of the litter trays but that would be a better idea, or maybe do both.

My buns are in big 2 storey hutches but being lazy angoras they tend to just stick to their upstairs. And when it's not wet I put then in runs on the grass, which they love. Last winter I cleared an old brick outhouse and now their hutches are in there - it's great cos I can store bails of hay, their food bins etc and their hutches are bone dry and will probably last forever now they're not outside. It takes a while to find a set up that gives the buns the maximum space and work for you though, eh?

At the moment the are in a cage indoors. Will move them to a hutch when they are a bit older - have seen some lovely hutches, much better designs than they used to be. Also, have heard a lot of warnings about foxes - worse now we have wheelie bins as no bin bags to rummage through.

We put hay in both the trays & baskets. The baskets are suspended above the litter trays so that they mostly poop in the litter tray.

We've got 2 pairs in the house & one pair come out at night & the other during the day. They sleep under the sofa. Not managed to bond all 4 & they would fight if we tried so we like having the two pairs. All 4 neutered of course.

They like sleeping on the high shelf in their bed, bunnies love it up on heights so they can keep an eye on their surroundings & feel safe.

I wouldn't keep rabbits outside but I realise that it's not always practical to keep them indoors esp if you have cats/dogs etc.

a wood based cat litter could be good for litter trays

We have used the wood pellet type cat litter before & it was pretty good. They didn't eat it & when damp it crumbles & absorbs the wee. Very hygienic & didn't smell at all.

It's quite expensive though as we had 12 bunnies back then.

Yep, I have a cat and dog (neither of whom bother the bunies - in fact the dog adores them). But my neighbour has about 6 cats all of whom think nothing of walking into our house wheneve they get a chance and they are very 'interested' in the buns in their hutches/runs so I'd never risk letting them get to the buns.

Cos my angoras need a lot of grooming, they come indoors on a regular basis and when they come in, we let them wander around for a while. I have 5 kids - 2 of them still young and rowdy - so my buns are happier outdoors! I have a friend who has an indoors and an outdoors bunny, and it's brilliant. Maybe when my kids are older and if my neighbour stops collecting feral cats - I may one day be able to have a house bunny!

people actually bed rats on it instead of shavings, as it's less prone to causing respiratory problems and has very good odour control

personally i like shavings as they're cheap and effective
i only have standard coated rabbits however (ND's & an english) but they do have their drawbacks as described, and i've found with my long coated guinea pigs

I only have 2 buns at the moment and find Megazorb (wood pulp) very reasonable - far cheaper than the wood shavings I used to get in the big chain pet stores etc before I knew to go to farm shops for my pet stuff! I think it's £7 and I find myself using very small amounts in the litter trays as it's designed for horse wee, it's so much more absorbent. I've just last week bought a new sack and the last one I probably bought a few months ago.

As I recall, another reason we stopped using that pelleted litter was because one of the buns had a sore hock & so we thought paper would be more comfy for his feet. It worked really well so we just kept using it.

We had to keep him on vetbed too as his poor feet used to get really sore & he was prone to ulcerations. It took a lot to get rid of it & one thing that really helped was the vetbed & paper in his tray.

Ah thanks. I'll keep an eye on my angoras' hocks then - I had a rex once and knew it was a common problem with them but thought angoras would be OK with all the extra cushioning on their feet!
