This may seem like a silly question but I don't really think that Doctors should be classed as a soap. I know it's not featured on Digital Spy as a soap but it was up for awards at the Soap Awards and actually won the Best Single Episode (which we think should have gone to Emmerdale anyway!) However, The Bill was not featured but is probably more of a soap as it doesn't have episode titles.

How can a soap have an episode title? It should be a continuous drama with ongoing storylines! What could you have called tonight's episode of Corrie or Emmerdale? It's ridiculous.

But Doctors is shown during the day. Most people work during the day so can't really follow lots of characters with different storylines meaning each episode is not often a follow on from the previous one although some do. I suppose thats why they have episode titles.

I don't think of The Bill as a soap - although i don't watch it, i used to, but i understand it has changed...

I don't really know what makes a soap, I often just think of a programme as a soap if someone tells me it is.... lol

I've never actually seen doctors, so i wouldn't be able to say if i class it as a soap.... i had barely heard of it before the soap awards!

Last time I looked it was something you washed with. Seriously though, a 'soap' was originally something on the radio, rather fluffy and non-demanding, interspersed with loads of ads for washing powder.

By the way you should start watching The Bill again, it's really good at the minute. Although, as it's a soap, it would be quite difficult to understand what's been happening as so much will have changed.

Me too, and I agree...it is good.
With the exception of the woman who played Irene Raymond in EastEnders. Chief Inspector Gold? Good grief.... my hands are just itching to grab a pair of scissors and tidy her hair up - its a mess

Do you think of Doctors as a soap? And what about Home and Away, Hollyoaks and Family Affairs? They're not featured on Digital Spy but surely they're soaps.

all wrong. a soap is a drama aimed at woman [and gay men] looking at relationships.

LOL. I must be gay then, as I watch EE (and the Bill, which I think is a soap).

Soaps are really about showing a virtual real-life drama, so you could even go as far as saying Star Trek is a soap but set in a different time period.

To be a soap a programme has to have a continuous plot-line and be about 'real life' albeit an exagerated form (i don't think Star Trek counts)

Doctors has the same main characters every week and their storylines are continuous, even though they have different patients each episode.

Sorry but that's an oversimplification, like all str8 men liking football.

Another point to the poster who implied that if a prog had episode titles then it wasn't a soap - both "Dallas" and "Dynasty" had episode titles. Although they did not appear on screen they were always billed in the "Radio Times".

PS they had a sci-fi soap called "Jupiter Moon" on old BSB around 1990.
