When Did The Most Successful Artists In The World Actually "Make It" ?
Many of the people who I admire were before my time, or were fully established when I was too young to even have known who they were.
I like knowing which year, or which album, really cemented an artist in history. Could someone please clarify the following, and add more to the list? ![]() Michael Jackson - although Thriller was said to be his "opus", and was HUGE when it was released, I always thought he only reached the "global megastar" status in 1990-ish with "Dangerous" ? Beatles - Were they as famous as they are now during their career, or only afterwards? Britney Spears - Only after her third album in 2001, (although surprisingly 3 years after her debut!) Mariah Carey - As I understand it, she had accquired the label of the "benchmark of singing" after about 6/7 years, so 1997? Whitney Houston - Although she was already huge before, I always saw her as only reaching the megastar status after the Bodyguard, is that right? 1992? Madonna - She already had a greatest hits by 1990 didn't she? When did she reach the status that she has now? Beyonce - In my eyes, I thought she had already reached the level at which she is now after her second album. People keep saying her recent album is what shot her to the heights at which she is now, but I don't think she has got better since her last album - just maintained it. |

QUOTE] Michael Jackson was already pretty big before Thriller with Off The Wall, but I think Thriller was definately the one that made him into the superstar he was. Regarding the Beatles, google Beatlemania! Having a Greatest Hits album doesn't make you a superstar. The Red Hot Chilli Peppers had a best of album way before they became as big as they are now |

I believe that with Single Ladies Beyonce Cemented herself in the industry.. the video and the impact was just crazy... Though i think she had already made it really while she was in DC
Britney i agree about Oops being her 'made it' moment.. she was literally untouchable then.. kinda like how GaGa is now |

these lot were all pretty big as soon as they started releasing records, they all had huge hits straight away, then the media gave them superstar status

I think Madonna made it around the time of True Blue (the album, not the song.)
In those few years she was releasing loads of big tracks. 5 #1s in 2 years (Into the Groove, Papa Don't Preach, True Blue. La Isla Bonita and Who's That Girl) Christina was probabbly when 'Beautiful' was released. Personally I perfer Dirrrty and Fighter, but when Beautiful was released I remember everybody seemed to love it. It's a classic. I would say Pink made it with 'Get The Party Started'. So What is her biggest hit though. |

People keep saying her recent album is what shot her to the heights at which she is now, but I don't think she has got better since her last album - just maintained it. i think they all managed to hit it big early on, i mean Madonna's debut got her worldwide acclaim. But i think Like A Virgin(24 million albums shipped) certified her as a worldwide phenomenon including cultural fads and many hits released in that era and True Blue (28 million shipments) and Like A Prayer (21 million shipments) further allowed this to grow in the 80's. and still is a major star today! her fanbase continues to grow. Confessions was a massive selling and critically acclaimed, along with Ray Of Light and Music. even some underrated work remains culturally relevant and pivotal. and of coure her title of Queen Of Pop was most rewarded. and of coure now she hold the most records in the industry with sales competing with The Beatles and matching Elvis! Beyonce i think hit it out with her last album really with Single Ladies. Brit (like Madge) hit it early on (no pun intended) with her debut selling almost 25 million and continued strong sales makes her the youngest multi million selling artist with almost 100 million albums and singles sold WW. Whitney of course hit it big with Bodyguard which sold 42 million WW and had loads of singles from it. Michael Jackson had loads of hits with the Jackson 5 and his 20 million selling Off The Wall, Thriller sold over 80 million due to the mass popularity of 1982-1985 which had just about every single on Thriller. then i find that with Bad and Dangerous he became much more of a cultural staple than his previous albums, he was certainly at his most popular throughout this period. it was through this he became more diverse in his work and sound of his albums. The Beatles always had massive sales and a fanbase throughout the 60's and albums sales continued even after they departed. Elvis Presley also while having a massive fanbase during his era and reign on the charts it was after his death that sales started to peak again, regaining a newly found popularity.making him currently the highest selling solo artist of all time. |

Madonna's performance of Like a Virgin (wedding dress) at the VMA's in 1984 turned her into a worldwide star.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0Sb9XP-Jn4 I remember Bon Jovi being interviewed and they were wondering if they would ever have that break through hit like "Like a Virgin" and then they released "Living on a Prayer" |
