Cheap cat litter

Ran out of our usual stuff so got the cheapo brand from Asda, got it in the past and it's ok although it doesn't stay as fresh for long as more expensive brands.
The bag seemed heavier than I expected and when I opened it today it seems to be made of 95% gravel and 5% clay
There is actual chunks of crystal in it too, if I'd wanted gravel I'd have gone to the garden centre!
I know it's the economy brand, but gravel is not absorbant like clay and is not going to keep fresh at all! Well, that's definately the last time I buy it, or I'll get myself to B&Q for a bag of gravel

I tried the cheaper brands but always go back to catsan. It might be more expensive but it doesnt smell so much. I do use a lot as all my trays are cleaned everday. I do have quiet a few cats.

My favoured cat litter was a cheap brand called Thomas, they used to stock it in Costco but then they moved to Catsan.

The Thomas stuff was clay based, odour was pretty good and clumped nicely for scooping.

I use Catsan now because I can't seem to find Thomas locally anymore. Als the Catsan is quite good with odour too but not so great on the clumping.

I always get Otto cat litter from Lidl, it's good for clumping and disguises the odours quite well. And apart from that it's cheap - less than £2 a large sack.

I think Pettex is very similar to Thomas, if you can find that locally.

I found it difficult to do a cost comparison of litters, because the amount you use, and the bag sizes, varies so much. I found Catsan really wasteful because it doesn't clump so you throw away so much each time - I could barely lift my bin bag! I use World's Best now, it looks expensive but a bag lasts ages because it clumps really well, also very good on odour control.

I use Bio-catolet, £8.99 for a 25ltr bag from Pets at Home. It absorbs odours well and is environmentally friendly

I bought the Smartprice Asda one last year, ended up using on the drive when it was icy - it was awful as cat litter. Their Antibacterial Litter is very good though.

We usually use Thomas, never had any problem with it apart from finding places that sell it! Will definately try some of the other brands suggested here

I Have more or less always seen Pettex and Thomas at local shops, my local shops sell both.

I Use to use Tesco premiier or premium whatever its called not too bad but doesnt clump, I use their own cheaper brand and to be honest it isnt that bad.

My sister always uses the wood base stuff no smell whatsoever and the amount you are supposed to use isnt much, this is the litter that most animal charities and vets use.

I know its a waste but suits me I use cat litter liners also.

We use tesco value brand. We've got 5 cats though so we change a few litter boxes every day.

I've noticed catteries are fond of woodchip litter and that surprises me because a fair few cats don't like it (the pellets are quite large grade and can be sore on the paws). I used to use it but changed a few years ago because one of my cats wouldn't use it, I always remind my cattery to use Pettex rather than woodchip for mine. (I can't claim there was no smell with the woodchip variety though - that really would be a miracle)

Yesterday's News Cat Litter is great. Made of newspaper (obviously) hard pellets. It's great stuff and good value.

I use New Safety Tread Granules, just a general absorbent used mostly for spillages. I bought a pallet of 55 bags at 30 litres each. The cats love it and saved myself a fortune buying other stuff all the time.

Might not be practical, but I'd definitely recomened buying a pallet in bulk of whatever it is you use as the price saving tends to be quite large.

A word of warning! Under no circumstances use it for gritting the drive during wintery weather. During the recent snowy weather some idiot (in the newspapers, I think) suggested using it as a grit substitute. So, I bought a couple of bags of Sainsbury's cheapest and spread it on the drive. Within half an hour the hall carpet was covered in embedded, crushed cat litter brought in by people on their shoes. It took me ages of scrubbing to clean the carpet.

I used Asda's cheapo stuff and that worked great - no mess in the house and no falling over outside!

Yes, because it's bloody gravel and not cat litter! My cats are not impressed!
