This thread is a waste of room on the forum.
The programme's makers were later accused by an unnamed source of wasting money but a BBC spokesperson has now issued a robust defence of the programme. 'Unnamed source'? Are they too ashamed to step forward and risk the fan's wrath?

1. The original report appeared in The Sun which is owned by Mr Murdoch who has a massive, double-headed axe to grind with anything that the BBC does.
2. As Confidential is presumably filmed concurrently with the main episode featured then I would imagine that Matt would have taken a short trip from Croatia to Venice during or just after VoV was filmed. In that event surely any extra cost would have been comparatively small. |

Well it cant be the flights what cost the money, because they all boarded the Tardis, which took them all there.
So whats the problem ? ![]()

They probably used Venice just to get photos and stuff.
(Like how they went over Cardiff in a helicopter for Torchwood, or getting shots from the top of the Empire State building for that episode that the crack should get rid off.) |

I'm sure Worldwide TV rights, sales of merchandise /DVDs /Blu-Rays/books etc will more than recoup the costs. Dr Who is the most profitable TV programme on British television so a return flight on Easyjet for Matt shouldn't really break the coffers!

Wait; can't he cycle to Venice? EG: Cross the Channel Tunnel and then hop across europe. If he did that; would you complain that he spend 'Taxpayers' money on a bike?

No, it's funded by everyone who has a television, regardless of whether or not they watch the BBC. That's far worse than being funded by the taxpayer.
But we shouldn't let logic and facts get in the way of a good rant, should we? |

Nor the fact that if own a TV but you don't watch any live broadcast channels then you don't need a TVL.
As someone else already mentioned, this is just another non-story by and anti-BBC Murdoch-owned rag. |

I'm more than happy to pay the licence fee in return for Doctor Who.

Lets turn this thread into a bit of fun...as I don't think the argument is going to go anywhere as such, considering the BBC have put a valid reason forward anyway....
So lets instead guess what controversy will surround Doctor Who next wee after three attacks in one week alone! I'll go first.... Doctor Who encourages pregnant women to swing!!! Who is suggesting Old people are Mad..... Any more ideas?????

How does that spoiler (first post after the opening thread) fit in with this????
And is it true? On the Thread issue, The BBC is set to rake in 100million from Dr Who over the next few years. If every show was as profitable then there would be no need for a license fee. Simples |

The education system that leaves a sizeable proportion of the population with no real desire to read any newspaper that may be even slightly more intellectually stimulating or challenging than the Sun is significantly more of a waste of taxpayers' money than Doctor Who.

What about all the millions of TVs overseas - our cable viewers all pay a smigeonth of the funds that keep the BBC going - so can someone please tell the Sun that all the airline tickets to get the Who cast and crew to Venice were prepaid by Continental cable TV and by Dr Who sales to the US of A? (You will need to take an atlas with you as audio-visual aid.) As Terry Pratchett says (and there's another thread for this), Dr Who scripts break all rules of narrative and physics but are incredibly entertaining and he's happy to watch. I think it's addictive - some gas emanates from the TV screen and makes straight for my brain. By the way, there's a huge oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico, so why don't we use the Sun's output for the next month to plug the leak? good way to recycle printed rubbish. |

In fairness they aren't actually suggesting DW is a waste of tax payers money, they are saying the DWC trip to Venice was. Now I disagree with that notion, but it doesn't change the fact the thread title is a bit misleading. It's not even like that is the headline that the DS article runs with.
Anyway, I agree with the person up thread who said they would pay the licence fee for DW alone, in fact I'd pay twice as much. |

We're probably about to end up with a Conservative government, which will commence demolishing the BBC. That will solve the OP's concerns once and for all.
