Please Please Please - Somebody Save Eastenders
Who let tonights sorry state of an episode air on BBC1?
I think 75% of tonights episode was taken up with one character trying to tell another character some important information whilst the other one was too busy mouthing off about something completely different. Pat talking to Ian, Pat talking to Gary, Billy talking to Sam, Billy talking to Kat. Spencer trying to talk to Vicky, Kelly trying to talk to Vicky. I mean who actually lets this crap air? It was almost as if the first 25 minutes of the show was just padding followed by a minute of actually moving the story forward. I mean, no wonder Letitia Dean wants to leave the show when she has to turn up for work and get involved in such limp and uninspiring storylines as Vicky trying to set up Kelly and Spencer. I mean, how can Mal Young, a man who won a lifetime achievement award at The Soap Awards last week, actually allow such wank to go out on air? It's a an embarressment and it makes me wonder why I get so worked up about it but then I realise that actually I care, I truly care about a show I have watched since it began. Sandwiched between Eastenders tonight was Corrie and I haven't always been the biggest fan of theres. But it was firing on all cylinders tonight. Storylines continually moved forward, cracking dialogue, funny dialogue too and most of all, no stupid games played between characters just to pad out the episode. Eastenders really is in danger of becoming history. Ironic then, that the man responsible for bringing this once great show to the BBC returned to work there today, Michael Grade. Perhaps he, even though it's nowhere near his remit, may see fit to kick this show up the arse and breathe back some much needed life into it. |

I agree, it really needs a big shake up. I find myself switching off halfway through because I really DON'T CARE about a lot of the storylines anymore!

I found tonights Eastenders, very long, plodding and desperate too in some aspects.
I'm sorry but its going to have to go if this is the way forward, and I think Michael Grade may see sense and ditch it if this persists. |

Have to agree with you. Tonights Eastenders was very poor. Nothing ever seems to happen. Stories go round in circles. There is no continuity in the show at all. Zoe Slater has spent the last few episodes texting and pining for Dennis who seems to have disapeared off the face of the earth. Pat seems to have forgotten all about Janine and is walking around the Square achieving nothing. All of a sudden, Alfie is to be sent on a course without any notice and he didnt even ask where he would be staying. The Spencer/Kelly/Vicki storyline is boring me to tears and Sonia is going to marry her previous fiancees killer and nobody bats an eyelid and everyone seems to have forgotten that Sharon was seeing her stepbrother not so long ago but now they are all living under the same roof and everything is hunky-dory. The only consolation about tonights episode is that we werent subjected to more of the Ferreiras housing excitement. Mal Young should be ashamed of himself for what he has allowed to happen to this show.

Dead Ringers took a nice dig at EastEnders tonight, at least a part of the Beeb realise the show is unwatchable.

Haven't watched the last couple of episodes...I just cannot be bothered whatsoever, that's IT for now. I'm just so sick of it all, and I'm now past the point where I watch just to see what's going on and in the hope something good happens, or the worry that I'll be missing something if I don't.
I'm just totally drained of any compulsion to tune in. I'd like to think others are/will be doing the same, because severely low viewing figures is quite possibly the only thing that'll get it back on form by shaking up the writers/producers and/or replacing a few of them, like Berridge. |

I am afraid I don't bother watching it any more. I keep up with the storyline via the BBC website and if it looks interesting I'll watch it. I just have a horrible feeling that for the next few months its going to be 'whose baby?', 'wedding arrangements going wrong', 'people not talking to one another when they should'. What do these characters do when the door closies behind them. Even in Neighbours you get the impression that life goes on when the camera is turned off. I am very sad. I didn't watch EE when it first started but started watching when Den and Michelle had their canal-side conversation.

I only watch EE now out of habit, and the fact that its that time of evening when we all sit down and watch TV. Having said that, yetserday one of my kids decided to listen to music instead, and in a couple of weeks when Big Brother starts my TV viewing will change.

Wow, BB. I had nearly forgotten. At least they have auditioned people in person this time. That's my summer evenings sorted.

I've watched EE for many years. The last 2 weeks i've missed more than i've watched. It's crap at the moment. Boring predictable story lines, I'd like to think with all these bad reports they will shake things up and get some decent writers in again..
But with the new BB show coming up. I may actually tune in and see what it's like. Hopefully it won't be quite as predictable as EE is at the moment! |

Maybe, just maybe, they've started to realise that storylines are dire and the show is losing the plot.
Here's two jobs going on the show right now which anyone can apply for as they were advertised in The Guardian on Monday. The only downside is that any new talent arriving to work on the show will end up having to wait six months to a year for any of their ideas to surface on screen. http://www.bbc.co.uk/jobs/e74131.shtml http://www.bbc.co.uk/jobs/e74132.shtml |

Doubt anyone decent would volunteer for those jobs at the moment, think what working on Eastenders would do for your credibility

Another forum I belong to was actually started as an EE's fan forum & now all we seem to discuss EE's wise is how crap it's become. Last night there was a discussion asking if there was actually a storyline in the whole episode.

Sounds like they need saving. Last night they lost nearly half their Tuesday night EE audience:

Only 6.4 million viewers (34% share), maybe it is time it followed Brookside, and is laid to rest with the money being invested in new drama.

If the BBC don't do somthing soon after those totally dismal ratings (which could well be the worst ratings for Eastenders ever) I think it'll be too late to save the show. There comes a point where no matter what you try, the audience won't come back. This is what happened with Brookside.
I agree the money they spend on Eastenders could be put into new, much better dramas - like C4 did with Shameless and No Angels. I was annoyed when they axed Brookside, but the new dramas have been good. |

http://media.guardian.co.uk/overnigh...220199,00.html Just when EastEnders bosses thought things could not get any worse, following the suspension of actor Leslie Grantham following a tabloid expose of internet sex sessions, the flagship BBC1 soap's audience last night slumped to what is believed to be its lowest ever. Last night's edition of the beleaguered soap had just 6.4 million viewers and a 34% share of the audience between 7.30pm and 8pm, according to unofficial overnights. *admin edit* - please do not quote in full copyrighted articles. thanks. . |

Wow its dropped that low? I agree it is dire at the moment and last nights was no exception. Hopefully Michael Grade can breathe life back into it, it really is dead on its feet at the moment. And it seems every week theres a scandal involving one of its cast, Den last week, Lynne this week. It seems the actors who get on EE, once they're there they think they're bigger than the show and run amock and end up in the press. You can't take a soap seriously when half of its cast are in the papers acting worse than their characters. You kind of thing, hmmm maybe EastEnders should be a reality show lol You very seldom hear of any Coronation Street actors, especially the younger ones out on the tear, getting into fights etc.

The following characters need to be axed:
The Ferreiras including Tariq Gus and Juley Andy Hunter Vicki Watts Minty Derek Den Watts too much bad publicity Some of the old scriptwriters from years ago need to be brought back. The only good scriptwriter at the moment is Sarah Phelps. Better use should be made of existing popular characters. Somebody give Dennis Watts a decent storyline. He has as much screentime as one of the extras at the moment. Get this daft Andy/Alfie and Kat story finished. Episodes need to be faster paced and not go at a snails pace with nothing happening. Any other ideas? |

I watched EE last night for the first time in months and I quickly remembered why I stopped watching it. boring, boring, boring
The show has become silly and the characters are very difficult to care about. |

I wouldn't axe Derek, I think he is a welcome addition to the show. For a start, Ian Lavender is a very good actor, unlike half of the cast. Secondly he can be used (as seen in the episodes when Mark died) to good effect by allowing Pauline and Martin to bounce off of him.

It's like all the Dr Who fans who were whinging when he was appointed into his job - because he axed Dr Who when he was controller of BBC1, they thought he'd scupper the new series when he became chairman of the board of governors! Once again, it's not his job, he has no say in the matter!
