Skysports/freesat

Given the recent ofcom ruling about skysports going on top up tv but i am surprised there has been no mention on freesat they have the hdr boxes with the cam slot to possibly take sky sports but i am a bit amazed nothing has been said.

You can't directly get a pay channel on Freesat. Even if a box can take a CAM it still needs someone to provide all the payment processing, encryption and access facilities.

So it's really off topic for the Freesat form. Doubly so for the Freesat+ forum.

Right seemed it may have been a long shot as emma scott did say something like they wouldn't stop a pay system being added.

Any pay stations I think would have to be net based as a CAM slot is not part of the basic freesat spec

Too restrictive - assuming any such thing ever happens, it will be based on a new Freesat box with a CAM slot.

The Sky Player is already starting to appear on Freeview boxes such as 3view and I think the new Humax one, so I don't see why this won't happen with the next generation of Freesat boxes. Why is it too restrictive?

Much of the UK doesn't have sufficient internet speed, plus where is all the bandwidth going to come from?.

Sorry to be picky but the 3view box is not a "Freeview" box it is a generic DTT receiver. Oh and so far as I've heard will not actually have Sky Player or iPlayer at launch - these are future carrots they are dangling to hook consumers.

There are plenty of online players available now, they don't seem to be bothered about bandwith. Can view them on pc's, wii, ps3, freesat and bt vision boxes.

You can stream the iplayer with 1 mb download.

3view not an official freeview player, but can watch all freeview channels except for the BBC red button.

Also fingers crossed projec canvas boxes will be out this year also.

Or about picture quality , which is substantially poorer than broadcasts.

It's OK as long as you have a decent bitrate on your ADSl, AND not many other people are doing the same. Don't forget your 2Mb or whatever is shared by up to something like 50 people - if only ten of them are watching IPTV them your bitrate is down to only 200Kb.

People seem to ignore contention ratios.

And some people do not fully understand how contention actually works in practise either.

Perhaps you would care to enlighten us with your thoughts then?.

I think you'll find that the Ofcom ruling says that Sky have only to offer their channels to cable and DTT and not other satellite platforms.

I agree Nigel and that applies to the broadband companies.. I have NOT even seen the term mentioned in the last year or so..
I have long advocated that those of us on long lines at barely 1Meg should in all fairness be in contention ratio groups of say 10 not 50.. No idea if that is feasible or not.

I merely stated that someone with a 1mb steady download speed can stream iplayer. I usually get between 8mb and 10mb depending on the time of day and have never had a problem streaming any online player.

The higher quality option on the Freesat only needs 2mb and the picture quality is ok on my 40" telly. As peoples speeds go up (which they will) then so will the quality. BBC HD on the online version of iplayer looks superb on my imac screen. Hopefully they will relay this out so I can watch this through my Humax HDR.

TV streamed online is here to stay

I don't think it matters that much.

You are not contending for the local loop so the fact that there are people far from the exchange with very slow connections means that the contention ratios are not likely (or not as likely) to come into play.

Of course if it was just you with a slow line and you were being multiplexed with a lot of people getting 8Mb you might have cause for complaint (but even then, the fact that you were not trying to get 8Mb would mean that any contention would affect you less).

I am obliged and consoled a little as i now can think of it as 'Peak Clipping'..
I hate it when BT say the National Average is over 4megs when millions within 50miles of London are under 2Megs!!

LOL, not that I want to defend BT in any way, but do the math - it only takes one person on 20Mbps to raise the average to 4Mbps for them and 5 others who only get 1Mbps.
Edit: In fact because broadband speed has a non-uniform distribution it is likely that the majority of people have below average connection speed.
