Lauren's was easily the best and Jenny's was a really lovely vocal. Danielle was shouty, Steph's performance was lumpy and Jessica's was a very poor vocal. Sophie did well though.

For me, I couldn't help comparing Jenny's performance with Jodie Prenger's turn at the same song from the Nancy competition, whose version I found to be superior.

Lauren...there's something about her I don't like. If it was just a singing competition then sure, Lauren would be in the finals. It might be that I think Dorothy is supposed to be naive and innocent, but Lauren doesn't come across that way to me...

I guess we're all looking for different things.

Vocal competency isn't top of my list of priorities. All the girls are at the very least reasonable singers and that's all you need to be to tackle the songs in The Wizard of Oz (according to ALW).

So then it comes down to other factors like acting ability and personality.

Overall, taking all these things into consideration, Jenny and Lauren weren't the best of the night for me.

Were you watching the same show as the rest of us? Lauren was awful, she's overtrained and should lighten up a bit. Danielle is always shouty, I don't know why John and Sheila think she is so wonderful. Steph and Jessica were the best. Sophie is too shy, she needs to get some lessons in how to project herself more. Forgot Jenny - that sums her up. Her performance was forgettable.

Well, I'm only speaking for myself, and I presume you are too. Steph's performance was really not good at all and Jessica was piss poor - did you hear the last note?

How can a singer be over-trained? That makes no sense to me at all.

Of all the girls Steph is not Dorothy.She has no girlishness about her at all.She struggled last week and she did not come across very well this week.

Again Lauren was the best on the night,but I will admit she must have a different down to earth,more human kind of a song to show her versatility.

Yes Jessica was good.What a song choice though.I think she may have been the only one to have pulled it off.
Also by far the best in the medley.

I think tonight also showed that Danielle has floors.
I am not quite sure whether singing the medley with an American accent was a good idea.

And how should she lighten up exactly? She doesn't bellow every song; I'll Never Fall in Love was a perfect example.
As was her Bridge Over Troubled Water. A measured, smooth, intelligently acted vocal.

I think you can be 'overtrained'. I prefer to use the phrase 'too refined'.

Yes Lauren's virtually note perfect and she pulls the required facial expression at the the appropriate time and makes a gesture with her arms (usually implying she has tummy ache). But it's all a bit robotic. I don't think she sings with soul and I don't feel like she's got a very interesting or endearing personality.

I thought Lauren and Jenny were the best vocally but both lack appeal IMO which is a major ingredient that a Dorothy should have

Danielle, Sophie and Jess all have appeal (although Jess is rather marmite and I'm not keen on her myself)

And Sophie though I love her (bless her) and she is the best vocally out of the three - she is not up to a leading lady role yet. She needs more experience and needs to conquer her nerves

Steph is also brilliant but it is a push to see her as Dorothy as she looks so mature close up. A different hairstyle would help (plaits or bunches) and she would make a very good Dorothy acting/vocal wise but she isn't a natural Dorothy IMO

So I guess no-one there is perfect. We need a mash-up of all of them

The stride across the floor looking constipated , the agonized look to the right and the deep and meaningfull stare into space are getting a wee bit boring now IMO

Lauren has a stunning voice bit like you said a bit like a maths formula at times .

She never to me comes across 'full of her self' at all on her VT's. All that I get from them is that she's a very determined professional young lady who's willing to give it everything with her performances and to become dorothy. nothing wrong with that. all of them at some point have said something which could be construed as confident. but in the theatre world that's a total requirement.

She's clearly got a phenominal voice. I think ALW did her no favours tonight though as he said something along the lines of agreeing with Charlotte that she can be a bit screechy at the top end ??? firstly that's nonsense and secondly Charlotte said nothing of the sort. all she pointed out to Laruen was that she doesn't have to do too many long notes but to clip some of them. Charlotte rates her vocal as near enough flawless so I don't know what ALW was going on about to be honest.

I do agree with some others on this forum though that say they wish she would be given something totally different to be able to let herself go and mess aroung a bit. Something like they gave Danielle last week. I properly enjoyed for the first time Danielle last week because of being given that number. Up until then she's been giving a very samey performance. Danielles performance tonight wasn't great for me really though. Revealed a slightly limited vocal range which i'd noted on a few occasions.

Im sorry for Jenny fans but I tend to think she was the right one to go tonight out of all of them.

Lauren should never have been anywhere near the bottom though. People should really be voting for the talent on offer and put there personal feelings about someone away like thinking that someone is full of themselves or unpleasant in some way...because there's no way you can tell that about someone from a few moments on a tv show each week. Especially as it gets edited cleverly too.

But of course people will vote how they want and that's all there is to it. It's one of the downfalls of shows like this.

It seems you're identifying what you think is a formula and ignoring everything she does that isn't part of that formula (which is a large share of her performance). It sounds like you've closed your mind to what she does because of one or two repeated gestures.

No I havent , I think she has an amazing voice , She is very talaneted and in fact was one of my favourites ,Its just the acting is learned looking and thats what I am saying .Like an overused formula . Jsut my opinion .

Could you use another contestant as an example of stage acting that isn't "learned looking"? They all have gestures and expressions they re-use, as musical theatre performers (who have to exaggerate expressions that can't be picked up with the subtlety of a camera) are trained to.

Perhaps John Partridge had a point when he was talking about the difference between the theatre and television. What looks good to us sitting on our butts in our living rooms with the privilege of close up shots, multiple angles and volume control may not seem so great at the West End. Lauren is the most experienced contestant, after all, perhaps she has the big stage in mind when she makes her gestures and expressions.

I think this really is something we should bear in mind. It is for this reason I think it was ok that Jenny was voted out tonight - I thought her performance came across really well (on the TV obviously, as I wasn't there!) but was therefore too subtle for a stage production.
