I can't understand why everbogy hates Evolution of the Daleks. I kind of liked them.

And why does everyone like Blink? I thought it was an ok episode but i found the Empty Child two parters much better.

What are the good qualties of Blink and what are the bad qualities of Evolution of the Daleks?

That the said hybrid appeared on the cover of the radio Times for that week (i.e. giving away the plot before the episode aired) probably has something to do with it.
The idea that Dalek's are into interbreeding, given their entire philosophy of "kill everything that isn't Dalek" is just absurd.
The guy who gets hybrided does a lot of overacting. Whilst Miranda Raison is gorgeous her New York accent isn't quite right.
Plus the cheesy ETS at the end.

i thought it was an okay two-parter, that was solid enough on its own- I really didnt think it was that bad, but that isn't to suggest I think it is by any means among the best- heavens no!

Blink is a very clever episode of the show, and I think it is brilliant. On occasion it does feel a bit overrated, and it certainly doesn't age very well. I preferred it to the recent angel story (which was also generally enjoyable) though, but describing it as the best of Nu-Who is wrong wrong wrong. It is among the best, and a favourite contender for the 'Best of Series', but there were better episodes between 2005 and 2009.

But it's only Sec that comes up with the interbreeding idea, for reasons that he argues very well. The other Daleks find the idea so repellent that they eventually kill him.

I don't mind Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks. It's no classic, but it's a perfectly enjoyable episode for me.

We'll all disagree on the best episode, and for me it's Blink. It's just perfection - a genuinely scary and brilliantly conceived foe, an attractive and sympathetic protagonist (the lovely Sally Sparrow) and fantastic writing and acting. Much as I love The Empty Child/The Doctor Dances, and I really do love it, I love Blink more.

well personally, i dont think Evolution.. should be singled out, because quite frankly, almost all the dalek stories in nu-who have been absolutly dreadful imo!
i dont like making too many comparisons with 'old-who', but i always make an exception for the daleks, and the old dalek stories were just classics, and i see no reason why we cant have more classic dalek storylines. moffat should be able to see to that!

I think one of the reasons why generally everyone considers Blink to be very good is because it took a technical limitation of the episode - an episode needed to be filmed with the 2 main stars in a minor role so that they could concentrate on the big end of season episodes that followed, and still came up with an episode that was one of the best in that season, unlike in season 2 where we got 'Love and Monsters'.

The 2 season 4 episodes that did this (Midnight and Turn Left) were also, in my opinion, one of the best in that season too.

It was just horrible. The pig people idea was horrible! The faux-American accents were horrible!! The human-dalek hybrid was horrible!!

Really? Last time I checked the Daleks have always tried to evolve into something more. That was the purpose of the four Daleks, too explore new ideas and thoughts to save the Daleks race. The original Dalek philosophy is to destroy everything that isn't pure Dalek. Those Daleks including Caan were not pure Daleks (and in fact hybrids themselves) and therefore did not have the same philosophy. This was later cleared up by Moffat by having the original Daleks, so don't expect another hybrid for many years.

The only Dalek story that I thought was very good since it came back this decade was 'Dalek' in 2005.
I really got the sense of incredible power from just one Dalek.
Since then it's been "Oh it's the Daleks. I wonder what the alien is going to be in the next story".

I don't know if the Daleks have ever seeked to evolve into something more, rather that in their quest to subjugate the entire universe under their rule, they occasionally need to seek an edge that their unchanging, inflexible personalities won't allow them to have.

Humans spread across the galaxy by integrating and adapting, the Daleks don't.

I'm pretty sure that the Cult of Skaro were pure-breed Daleks, at least genetically if not psychologically. They were deliberately sent into the Void to escape the Time War.

Still don't understand the hatred for L&M. It was filmed version of Elton's narration. It was as daft and as ridiculous as Elton's imagination is. Everything, the Scooby Doo chase, the ELO scene, the appearance of the Absorloff all Elton's imagination or embellished and fanciful recollection projected onto film. Blink, to me had unscary, boring stone statues and a female main character I couldn't give a hoot about.

I fully enjoy the Evolution of the Daleks and have personally never understood what some people find wrong with it.

I liked the style, the intention, the direction that the concept was going in. It's just it kind of went nowhere, got silly and fizzled out. A two-parter has a little more space to explore big ideas, and it was wasted.

Blink: Well written, genuinely scary, moving, amazing monsters, the dvd conversation is a wonderfull idea, closing speech by tennant probably gave a generation of children nightmares.

If i'm ever trying to convince someone that Dr Who is acctually good this is the episode i use.

Evolution of the Daleks:Silly monsters (pig men, dalek-man), awful faux american accents, conceptually odd (dalek's not usually keen on genetic diversity), clumsy historical comment.

Kind of felt like it was made so the merch deparment could make dalek-man action figures.

Really just rubbish. If this was the first Dr Who episode I ever saw there would not have been a second. (Thankfully it was the "Dalek")

As the two stories go, I had absolutly loved Blink first time round, and wasn't a huge fan of the Dalek two parter at all.....but as time goes by, I appreciate Blink less and less, and Daleks seems to improve, the only thing that doesn't improve is Tulullah, she does my head in! If you take her out of the equation, the story is quite fun romp, with hint of darkness, and I do notice something or another I didn't the first time on repeat viewings....while as clever as Blink is, its very hollow....and superficial story....

Blink is a very good story but not the best I've seen from the new series. Sally Sparrow was good in it, the use of The Doctor and Martha was well handled despite their limited appearances. As others have said I prefer Midnight and some of the Season Finale's.

Likewise, Evolution Of The Daleks is not the worst story in new who, hey, it's ten times better than Love and Monsters but it's my least favourite Dalek story of the new series so far! It's just downright grim and depressing and the hybrid creature was just a reversal of events already seen in The Evil Of The Daleks.

Blink was excellent on first viewing IMO, but when you watch it again you see the errors. Still a good story, though.
EotD - very poor. Too many unnecessary elements eg pig monsters.
ETS was funny, though. It became a catchphrase in our house.
And I still miss Dalek Caan, as he ended up in Journey's End.

I thought Daleks in Manhattan/Evolution of the Daleks were over long, a single episode would have done, the same with The Time of Angels/Flesh and Stone two episodes where one would have done, there wasn't enough depth in either story to carry it across two episodes.

I personally love Blink, and preferred the Angels as scavengers.

I didn't like Midnight (I can't exactly explain why though) but loved Turn Left, I agree with everyone of Love and Monsters, Fear Her and The Lazarus Experiment awful episodes.

I am not a fan of Martha so that may have clouded my view on most of the Season 3 episodes, although I really enjoyed Gridlock , Human Nature and The Family of Blood.

The 'Cult of Skaro' is RTD's device, the original Daleks are racial supremacists (based on the Nazis) so the idea that Sec didn't get taken out immediately he suggested 'evolution' is rather strange. Without wishing to intrude with the real world, look up the night of the long knives for what the Nazi's did to insiders they thought might betray them.

It is implied in Doomsday that the Cult were a last desperate gamble in the time war. My point is that you could have a story on these lines featuring more or less any aliens EXCEPT daleks!

Agreed that the best new dalek episode is Dalek, although the ending is a bit of a letdown. The moment when it levitates is priceless.

Without wanting to be unkind, Carey Mulligan is a MUCH better actress than Freema.

Not wishing to start another who's better than who debate, I will point out in Freema's defence that she did carry a lot of the story in 'Human Nature' and 'Family Of Blood' whilst The Doctor wasn't quite himself and it was Martha we turned to as 'The Lead' whilst Tennant was acting superbly as John Smith.

Taking nothing away from Carey Mulligan either. Thought she did well in 'Blink' and it's a shame she was never kept on as a companion.
