I loved this opening too. It was totally against type which is why it worked so well. The Doctor being both insightful (diabetic) and caring (jumper) but totally socially inept all at the same time.

And the wave of the hand at the end: like his ineptness erupting physically.

This is the brilliant, random, eccentric doctor that we've not had for (re)generations.

There's something odd about the scene, though.

When he first emerges he seems surprised and mentions 'wrong cake'.

Yet he's clearly just spoken to 'Lucy' and has come to talk to Rory about Amy so why does he look so uncomfortable as if he wasn't expecting to see what he saw?

Ignoring that, it was certainly a very funny scene.

He was surprised because he couldn't see Rory, and so he thought he might have got the wrong cake. Again.

Right!

Just watched it again - even funnier the second time around.

For me it's the best comedy moment from any Dr Who story.

What say you?

I say.. I agree with you

That's one of my favourites too

Another golden oldie: the Doctor trying to rescue Tegan from the Gravis in Frontios, convincing the Gravis that Tegan is an andoid. ("The walk was never quite right. And then there's the accent")

Jut shows how better Davison could have been if Nathan-Turner had let loose with the humour a bit more. Another fave line of his was when he was mocking Sharaz Jek in TCOA when he goes puts his arm around Peri and suggests they could all be friends, go for walks and have picnics round a camp fire(or something to that effect) and that whole' sir' sequence when first captured by Chellak!
