Defying Gravity - who was out of tune?

Very sorry if this has been covered elsewhere - I've read most of the threads but didn't have 20 hours to spare to read every last post - but somebody was WAY out in Defying Gravity and I don't have the singing knowledge to identify her. I think it wasn't Jessica - because I was listening out for her as the most likely culprit, much as I like her - but could be completely wrong. Help!

Danielle wasn't on good form last night but I don't remember specifically.

I think it was the bloke on the banjo.

Yes, I had a horrible feeling it was Danielle - very unlike her but top register is clearly not her strong point...

I don't think any of them were that bad during it, I preferred this performance to the majority of others, during their solo bits Jenny and Sophie were both very weak.

I've listened again and, to be perfectly honest, couldn't detect anybody singing flat when they were singing together. However, there were a few 'pitchy' bits (to quote Charlotte) in the solo lines - really tiny faults from Jenny, Sophie and Danielle. The others, particularly Jessica and Lauren, were pitch perfect.

Oh, and I'm saying that as a Danielle fan, but there's no doubt she did not have a good night last night and that includes her performance in the group numbers, where she is normally a knock-out.

Thanks, peeves - you probably know more than I do but I've listened three times now and there's something assaulting my ears. But they're not very good ears so they probably deserved it

I also heard one of the boys do it live on the BBC (I can no longer personally attend shows as I have dodgy ears - hyperacusis). Yes, I agree that it's hard to sing. But unlike other hard-to-sing songs, I'm not yet convinced that the ends justify the means. But there - these things are a matter of tastes, aren't they?

I thought it was terrible - but, I mean, what a horrible song! No tune, screeching - it's an assault on the ears.

Our tastes on that converge, then! I don't like it - not even when someone is trying to dance while singing it!

Defying Gravity is arguably the most popular song in the West End right now. The Dorothys did a good job but it was sung a bit too perfectly. It's one of those songs when a bit of talking of the lyrics brings a great show stopping performance. I thought no one was really off but it wasn't the best group performance they have done.

Kerry Ellis singing that song was one of my favourite moments in a theatre ever - and I've had a few.

If you're going to pinch my 'assault' phrase, you could at least credit me...

None of the girls were out of tune. Each of them has a good singing voice. The only question now is who would make a convincing Dorothy and as we have not been shown any acting to make a decision, I would pick Jessica as the most Dorothy like.

Ditto! Her growl on 'Look to the Western Sky' sent shivers down my spine And her Rock version is awesome!

i couldn't hear anyone specifically singing out of tune, but i thought it was an awful arrangement. it lacked any sparkle (or harmonies, for that matter) and seemed to be all about the girls trying to out-screech each other. i love it in the context of wicked, but it didn't work as a group performance last night!

It shows how much opinions differ, I actually thought a few of them performed their solo parts better than their actual solo performances.
