Lots of old grand buildings sure but they were at pains not to show any real canals.

Where was this filmed, Oxford?

If that is true then it was one of the biggest wastes of BBCs money ever.

It was obviously NOT Venice so they should have just used some British medieval buildings which were much handier.

All done with CGI. Even Amy Pond's legs are CGI. Amazing what they can do these days...

Trogir to be exact.

No, they used some European Renaissance buildings rather than some British Medieval buildings. There is a huge difference.

If you read the link, you'll discover that Trogir was ruled by Venice in 1580 and had been for some 160 years previously so, yes, it was a good idea to film there.

I think it is a fair question to the forums.

To be honest precious few of the millions of viewers on BBc1 ever watch the self-gratulatory "confidential".

However, most of the people who are interested in knowing details about how and where the episode was made, do...

Any excuse. Sad how the art of independent research has died out. The Confidential was very interesting this week

I also believe that you can download it so it doesn't matter if you dont have dial up. I had done that with SJA last year when they was first done in HD.

Actually Croatia does resemble Venice in some detail given some of it was built by Venetian traders. IT looks a lot more like it than Oxford does.

And they even shot stuff in Venice to drop in after to build up the exterior shots.

It would be a waste of money to shoot it in Oxford and then CGI everything and for it to look unconvincing. For one thing they would have to have built sets that look like Venice interiors. Whereas, in Croatia they found an interior that strongly resembled the interior of a building in Venice.

Not sure why a fan of DW complains about them spending our money so that we have a series.

Poppycod, another needlessly negative comment, to coin one of your previous responses to someone else's post...where is your proof in this statement...I'm assuming that you have some access to survey or poll data not shared with other viewers or you conducted the survey yourself. I would be interested to see your research!

Exteriors were croatia, interiors were I think various places in Cardiff. Some at Castle Coch (Osterhagen Station One and German Daleks, Journey's End)

The main interior, Rossana's school, was in Croatia.

If you look carefully you will see, in some scenes, the most amazing sculpted portal (the lions are just extraordinary - http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...detail_017.jpg )

The portal is the main doorway into the cathedral of St Lawrence in Trogir and it was finished in 1240 by the Croatian sculptor Radovan.

I would assume that in these days of budget cuts various options would have been considered and the one that was seen as most value for money - not necessarily cheapest - chosen. Even if it would have been cheaper to go for Oxford and CGI (I don't know how expensive CGI is) the end result might have been very poor visually. Probably the people would have been askng why they hadn't spent a bit more and done it properly.
