Ridley Scott's Robin Hood
Considering this comes out today, i'm really surprised that this forum is really quiet about it.
Does this mean that no-ones that fussed by it? Also noticed that Empire gave it 4 out of 5. This on the day they were promoting that they had interviewed its star Crowe. Did one influence the other? hmmm.... Having seen it can personally say it was a bitter disappointment. No more that 15 minutes action in a two hour twenty minute film And Crowe, what the hell is that accent? Norwegian? Irish? Leftovers from Gladiator?Review here. |

I saw it today and thought it was a bit of a snoozefest, sadly. I was quite relieved when it ended. Russell Crowe seemed to be sleepwalking through the role, a very lifeless performance.

Is it better than the animated version with the fox or the Mel Brooks version?

On a scale of one to ten of how bored I would be watching this film I'd give it ten.

Well....
I quite liked it, although I had low expectations.
![]() It's not too long, not difficult to follow, solid if not outstanding performances, and I actually left wanting a sequel because...

See if you can find the (Front Row?) radio 4 interview with Crowe the other day... the interviewer asked about a bit of Irish in his accent and Russell said his ears were out of whack and continued to bubble over with "boll**ks" etc. Funny, but pitiful at the same time... how old is he?

I can safely say i am certain i don't want to see this...the trailer looked awful. However the OH changed his mind yesterday saying he would like to see it so we'll see this weekend. 2 hours 20 minutes though

I saw it yesterday and I thought it was quite good but with some reservations. I didn't have any problems about the story being a more 'historically accurate' take on the Robin Hood legend but there were a couple of things that annoyed me and I'll put them in spoiler tags for those who haven't seen it.

Will see it, as curious how Gladiator Mark 2 comes off. Though that was pretty 'near' perfect, I STILL play the soundtrack, and it'll be hard to match.

I saw it today. Add me to the unimpressed list. It needs at least 40 minutes chopped off to speed it up.
The onscreen chemistry between Cate and Russell was almost non-existent. At times the acting got quite wooden. The characterisation of "the merry men" didn't happen. They just seemed to be in the background. There were certain scenes I knew were going to be in it as they appear in all these kinds of films. The final battle had a few really awful scenes in it that were ridiculous. An over-long average, forgetable film. 5/10 |

Kermode might be a Twilight: New Moon apologist, but I agree with him that Ridley's been spreading himself a bit thin in the years since Gladiator. Didn't like Black Hawk Down, American Gangster was ok, and Body of Lies forgettable. Some pretty amazing sequences in Kingdom of Heaven, though, which no one seems to like...

I'm already sick to death of Russell Crowe (way too old for Robin) and his little soundbites of how this film is so radically different. Give me men in tights anytime. Russell needs to get his head out of his pretentious backside....

I'm not sure I can bring myself to see a Robin Hood movie where Marian is played by Cate Blanchett.

It'll never happen. It's too far wedged up there!

Thank god i'm not the only one who was totally under-whelmed by the trailer, looks so much like Gladiator 2 it's unbelieavable. Steering clear for sure.

Was interested to see this film for some reason but don't think I will rush after the opinions on here. Herd Crowe on Front Row; why is that bloke so bad tempered? The comment about the Irish accent really niggled him, he didn't appreciate having aspersions cast on his performance, thankfully he didn't hear the opening comment when Mark Lawson said he sounded like an Irishman man who takes the odd holiday to Australia; I'm sure he would have got a right hander.

Hasn't Robin Hood been done to death?
I've just been reading that the budget was $237 million. Yikes. |

I watched it the other day and I got to admit it was pretty rubbish. It was slow, the "merry men" were not utilised properly and just come across as drunk comedy sidelines with a little action blotted around, maid Marion's character was very flat and not because the acting was bad but because the writing wasn't up to much. And they had lots of bits that were either not explained or was explained in passing which was annoying.
I am assuming a Director's Cut will be released and will have all this information explained. And what was with all the lost boy people - there seemed little need for them other than to add minutes to the movie. I know they explained who they were but they seemed redundant in my opinion anyway. |
