Has anyone heard Morrissey's new effort?

Heard the new single Irish blood, english heart on the Johnathan Ross show last Friday.
The review in the press is favourable too. Let's hope it does well.

The album is at number one in the latest midweeks. Hope it stays on course for number one this Sunday.

In all the excitement of it being his first album in years, it's easy to say that it's his best work ever or best since Vauxhall And I (as many critics are saying). Realistically, I put it on a par with Maladjusted. Don't get me wrong, I loved Maladjusted (I'm one of the rare breed who didn't find it disappointing) so that isn't a criticism. I just don't think it's his best ever. The sound is very similar to Maladjusted. On first listen to You Are The Quarry, I was reminded of songs such as Trouble Loves Me, Wide To Receive and Alma Matters - so no bad thing there. The highlight of Quarry is First Of The Gang To Die. It's upbeat, atmospheric and typical Morrissey. I wouldn't say that there is a bad track on the album, but at the same time there isn't anything that jumps out and amazes you. Whereas Vauxhall and Your Arsenal hit me immediately, Maladjusted and Viva Hate were growers. So in my opinion, after constant listening since Monday Quarry is more like the latter two than the former. I'll probably have a different opinion in a few months, but that's my first impression. Definitely not a disappointment.

this is the first one i've bought in a long time. loved the smiths, had Viva Hate which was pretty good - *everyday is like sunday*, *suedehead* and *late night maudlin st* particularly - but after that he didn't seem to do anything quite so good. (although thats not to say he didn't, i'd just kind of lost interest by then i guess)

so with all the bruhaha about the new one, and liking the single, i've bought the album - and i'd agree that it probably isn't on a par with a lot of smiths stuff, or EILS or suedhead even in terms of immediacy - but I do still like it enough to get a good few listens out it, and if its a grower it'll be no bad thing.

in a way it just seems like lazy journalism to trot out the old *return to form*, *best album in years* line. they did it for Prince's one as well a bit, but in the end it hardly was either. not really. (which was a shame)

Many of the reviewers who gave the album five stars don't really seem to have listened to the album. Either they all quote from the same press release ("best CD since Vauxhall" etc) or they have the attitude that Morrissey has been away so long that they have to give a great review. The reviews that I have tended to agree with are the three or four star ones that take a bit of perspective and don't just say that the album is fantastic just because it's Morrissey. You Are The Quarry is a very good album - great in places - but it's not the return to form that everybody has been rejoicing about. To me, Morrissey doesn't seem to have changed his sound or opinions dramatically in the seven years since his last album. As I said before, that's not a bad thing but I think some critics are getting a little over-excited

I agree with you about Prince too.

A fantastic album, definately a grower though - let's hope he hits No.1 on Sunday.

He made a good and very valid comment on Radio 1 last night - about being the only British artist in the current Top 5 singles chart, and yet it's the only one that daytime Radio 1 won't play.

Still it proves that you don't need daytime radio 1 play to make a hit single these days !

It is good to see that some artists are getting good sales and chart positions purely on the fact that they have a strong, loyal fanbase. Obviously Morrissey is the current example, but both Marillion and Status Quo have managed decent chart positions in the last year or so. It's funny to see those artists on TOTP being stared at by an audience who doesn't really know who they are. Apparently that is just the case with Morrissey on this Friday's TOTP (apart from a die-hard throng down the front according to www.morrissey-solo.com).
