Diet problems

Having a bit of a dither here at the moment -since Duncan has been on steroids he has been putting on weight at an incredible rate, so we have him on a diet. Looking at his food today 1/3rd can of complete low calorie special diet wet dog food and a carrot. He is starving hungry all the time - has taken to stealing if he can or eating dog poo !
Now coming off the steroids is not an option but starving him seems so wrong too.

He cannot eat meat (allergies) and rice is off the menu too.

The only protein he can eat is fish.

The other main ingredient he can eat is potatoes.

So would you let him put on weight whilst feeding him a healthy (for him) diet or would you carry on the starvation route to keep him lithe.

He is a big Yorkshire terrier - not one of those little hand bag dogs more like a smallish corgi size really.

He used to eat three meals a day which was made up of 2/3rds can meat and same amount of mixer. Vet told us to give him 1/3 of his usual meat and make up the meal with carrot instead of mixer. On that diet we can maintain his weight and he looks good. But any more and it just piles back on.

Exercise is difficult as he is allergic to grass - but we still manage 3 half hour walks a day but because it is on pavement he doesn't get any running off lead.
