That sounds about right when you consider those with Sky (not even Sky HD) only account for around a third of the viewing audience - and those with Sky HD significantly less. I'd be surprised too if at this moment in time the combined number of HD viewers on cable, Freesat and Freeview is more than those watching via Sky HD.

Well you can question them all you want, really... but I don't think many of us will be, will we? Fact is channel 101 in the EPG is a much more promiment position in the EPG compared to say 163 or whatever it is.


The ITV programme had just shy of 1m, the breakdown cuts off at 23:15, so it may be nearer 0.8m, but higher than BBC's.

Disappointing figure for the BBC highlights show which I thought was superb, perhaps people want a bit of a break from the football for half an hour or so before the highlights show.

Ah, that bit wasn't there when I read it. Not a disaster but a disappointment for sure - be interesting to see if it benefits from channel hopping tonight with it scheduled to begin at the end of ITV's match coverage.

Really should have been scheduled at 10pm last night though - the first evening match was always going to pull in an audience.

You know its a bad night for BBC Two when you're beaten by Channel 4 and Five. ITV by the way I'm guessing 'won' daytime as it was 1st from 13:00 to 18:00.

As for tonight, Doctor Who is more than likely heading for a record low in my view.

It is time that was addressed, especially as by the autumn Sky at least will have HD simulcasts of BBC1, ITV1, C4 and Five along with the principle channels. Two solutions really - either a separate EPG for Sky HD putting the HD channels in the SD channels slot, or Sky bundling all the HD channels into their own section on the EPG - perhaps all the general entertainment channels from 201.


Freeview obviously has a much smaller EPG, but HD channels are being bundled in the 50's rather than mixed in with other channels.

But Freeview, Freesat and Virgin's recent campaigns are all based on HD.

Even Freeview's MD Lise Howling said that the arrival of Freeview HD was the company's biggest day since its launch in 2002.

Sky has a separate EPG for HD. Leading with C4HD, BBC HD, Sky One HD and ITV1 HD.

Freeview HD is a brand new service and new areas are beginning to receive it all the time. It makes sense to advertise it especially when there seems to still be this misconception that you have to pay a subscription for HD. (I wonder who's to blame) Good idea to quash this fast!

At least they are good fun and a good parody of the ridiculous 'taking themselves far too seriously' adverts which $ky churn out.

That is good news at least, the show climbed 700,000 during the show, and the last 30 mins with +1, that 2.5m would have been 3m.

So now that all the ratings are in, those are fantastic ratings for the football matches. Bear in mind that the BBC's rating includes about 80 minutes of non-football talk, and it still averaged comfortaby higher than the equivalent match in 2006! ITV's share for their match was excellent. Still don't have a clue how tonight's match will rate. My prediction would be: 12m coverage, 16m match, 20m peak.

I watched The Chase for the first time last night, and it looks like a lot of other people did as well. Due to new viewers sampling it, its average could rise in the long-term even after the World Cup ends. I stand what I said a few weeks ago that Corrie would've been better off having the two episodes back to back - the 30 minute break cost the second episode nearly 1m viewers. Dickinson did well, but he probably would've got 3-3.5m at 20:30 anyway. I have to say, however, that Taggart did worse than I expected. In the past, even up against tough competition, repeats have been reliable 3m+ bankers.

Glee did better this week - I think the absence of EastEnders on BBC1 helped, but following it, BB was a bit on the low-side. Still a bit too early to say, but from the first 3 ratings it looks like it'll settle down to BB10 levels. BBC2 had a very poor evening. Five was rock solid and ratings were similar to usual.

Perhaps it's explained by the difference between "homes" and "viewers". I would imagine that most "HD homes" only have HD on their main set, and SD on their second (or third) sets.

A slight improvement but next week it's against England!

Primeval might not be the best example since that only survived because another broadcaster stumped up the extra cash that ITV weren't willing to in order to save it.

ITV have been behind BBC One at breakfast for so long that no amount of revamping/renaming is going to change things very much.

They'd be better off ploughing the money into the ITV1 primetime schedule, cos it bloody well needs it.

I think your right about the football, tonights match being the first has an extra novelty value for those who might never watch any other football. I went into town this morning and its everywhere-flags t shirts-all the shops and pubs decked out. Saying that I bet the trend of pub tv showings is having more of an impact these days on figures. Still think tonights will be huge though.

Both matches did well yesterday-the France game wasnt up to much yet BBC1 did brilliantly. There is obviously an early enthusiasm here. Agan if England do well it will carry interest to the other games-as well as the fact that alot of Premiership players are turning out for all manner of teams.

Speaking of BBC1, if England win their group it looks like they will have a prime 7.30 showing on Saturday 26/6/10 for the last 16 tie.

ITV very silly not air both Corries together from 7.30pm. They do this all the time when EE isn't on - the split is only there because of EastEnders, it's absolutely pointless otherwise and the second episode loses out as a result.

What slot would be their prize for scraping through in second place?
