I think he might outtrate the match next Saturday, simply because the match will do so badly and Corden's show might find a loyal audience that will tune in even if they don't watch the match. Even if his ratings do falter tonight and on Tuesday it gets another England lead-in on Friday to boost it again, and if the show is a bit more settled in by then it could find a few extra viewers then.

Interesting how the HD share for football is always around the 6% mark, even with the biggest FTA HD event in UK history.

With a 69% share, only one person watching in 69% of HD homes would give a peak HD rating of 2.76m!!

BARB is showing an HD peak of 1.72m if I've done the maths correctly.

Excellent ratings for all three football matches yesterday, particularly England's match which pulled in the numbers as expected. Match average was about 1m down from the England v Sweden game in 2006, but taking factors such as it being a Saturday and bigger out of home viewing into account, that's fine. Obviously absolutely horrendous that ITV1HD missed the first goal and once again it gives an impression that they're out of their depth covering live sport. Apparently the fault was at Technicolor's end, who handle ITV's transmissions, but after last year's FA Cup cock-up you'd have expected them to have a backup system in place in case something like that happened again. ITV need to make a proper apology and detailed statement as to how and why it happened. It's not acceptable for Chiles to just say there was an "interuption" on the HD coverage ! In terms of 'ITV Sport' coverage, it's still been good imo but everyone will now remember their coverage of this World Cup for that one mistake by Technicolor. Clive Tyldsley is absolutely devastated on Twitter!

Doctor Who did alright. It didn't rate lower than the episode a few weeks ago and of course timeshift should send it to 7m or abouts. But due to the lower rated episodes recently, a couple of which the officials have to be released, this season's official average could end up being the second lowest since 2005. It's a bit weird that the BBC rolled out In It To Win It recently, up against BGT and the World Cup. It's capable of 5m+, so I think they should have aired it later in the year against easier competition, and aired one of the rubbish Lottery editions which would have got a low rating anyway. Casualty can't have done much better in that slot but with better scheduling it should have started an hour later.

Good start for James Corden, but the big test is tonight. It's inevitable that the rating will be lower, but by how much is the question. If it settles in the 4-5m bracket, I think ITV will be delighted. Big Brother's rating isn't too bad - it's only 0.1m off the first Saturday rating of last year. Some of us were predicting a record low for last night, but it cleared that level by a bit.

Extremely good figures for the footie. ITV will be pleased. Over 1 million in HD too. I just hope people don't revert back to SD because of last nights mistake.

Great football numbers, but a smidge below expectations. The last primetime World Cup group game was England v Sweden in 2006 which averaged 18.5m (match) and peaked at 22.5m IIRC. That was something of a dead rubber as both teams were through, although 1st and 2nd place was up for grabs. I expected a 20-21m+ peak, which didn't happen.

Superb for the Argentina match on BBC1 earlier - 6m peak on a warm Saturday afternoon. The lunchtime ITV match did very well too.

Let's hope the tame England performance, and the unforgiveable ITV one, last night hasn't dampened interest.

Brilliant for the F1 against the England build up & Doctor Who, and on BBC2. The Beeb should have kept it on BBC1 from 5.15 after the football and let DW miss a week.


This was nothing to do with the "external feed", it was an ITV cock-up plain and simple. How can you blame a third party?!

The "few people" will include millions who watched in pubs and public places. It's a wonder there weren't riots when pumped-up, and in some cases boozed-up fans in large groups are deprived of England's opening goal by pure incompetence. By some accounts this morning, there almost were.

Questions will be asked, and heads must roll for this. Disgraceful, particularly as it happened before just 12 months ago. Michael Grade said then that it was unforgiveable and would never happen again. Unfortunately it has - Crozier and/or Norman should be considering their positions this morning.

Daft decision by the BBC not run Casualty after the match had ended. Tremendous peak and IIRC rzt prediction was pretty close. I presume its the whole slot that will be represented in the ratings records-if so Eastenders marches on.

Decent enough for Dr Who benefiting from being outside the match period (unlike Casualty), but lets face it, in a way last night represented a peak in national anticipation-with many perhaps idealistically thinking that England would sweep all before them. Its just a pity, but their own fault, that ITV messed up the HD feed at the critical moment-so its that which just adds fuel to longstanding culture(right or wrong) that ITV shouldnt do sport.

Another question to add to the list at ITV command today - were they responsible for all the slow-mo action replays that wrecked large parts of the coverage last night?

Exactly - the BBC have had a couple of stinkers of their own but seem to be excused because they are the BBC - and luckily for them the events were not so high profile. Didn't they lose the golf completely a few weeks ago too.


Average that out with their BGT predictions from last week and they're about right! And to answer my own question then from last week, football did beat BGT then!

I suspect it's downhill for James Corden from here on in - be interesting to see how many continued watching on ITV4. Usually for the spin-off shows the turnover rate is about 10%, so that would put it at around 600,000.

That was due to the host broadcaster. ITV has no control over that. And I agree, there's been way too many replays during the matches.


It's not been made clear. As Euro 2008's official ratings were not split, I think BARB has changed their methodology and the World Cup broadcasts will get just one rating. We'll find out next Monday.

If they were with Technicolor when the Everton/Liverpool fault happen then they simply must change playout facilities immediately. Red Bee do well with the BBC and Virgin Media channels, perhaps they should consider going there.

If ITV employ third parties to provide crucial services, they must carry the can for any foul ups. And particularly when the exact same foul-up happened 12 months ago and was promised to be put right and never happen again.

I don't think ITV will ever recover from this, personally.

The only BBC "stinker" was the thunderstorm which knocked out TV coverage in Euro 2008. But, that was worldwide problem, so no fault at all there for BBC.

And the Beeb responded magnificently by getting things up and running quickly and using the 5 Live feed till it could be sorted.

However - as per (bless you) - you take it all too far. It's laughable to claim that ITV will never recover from it. Mistakes happen, and if the BBC had to make money from ads, there would probably be a long-list of errors too.

Even without the ads, the BBC tends to have more "technical difficulties" than ITV.

The BBC has had a fair amount of cock-ups over the last few days that they have actually been responsible for whereas I haven't seen as many, if any, from ITV. Of course most people will think ITV were to blame for last night so they'll get it in the neck! It is their fault for remaining with that company though!

The BBC were reporting that the Pubs association were saying that they expected 4 million people to be watching in pubs. These of course are not counted, so the actual figures were probably way over 20m. The tabloids were probably correct!

If Technicolour are as bad as ITV employees are making out, and to blame for most of these problems, then there is a blindingly obvious solution to that. Ditch them and find another provider!

But as someone noted on the other thread, and they are absolutely right, you might be able to outsource responsibility for these things, but never accountability. It will always be ITV that are blamed for this incident and rightly so. It doesn't matter how bad or good the rest of the coverage has been, miss a goal and you're an incompetent sports broadcaster.

Anyway, I'm sure spirits at a shattered ITV have been uplifted somewhat by last night's figures which are actually rather excellent, even for James Corden. It's going to be fascinating now to see whether the HD figure goes up or down on Friday as more people realise that last night's issue was 'exclusive' to the HD service. I could see many switching back to SD just in case, not that that necessarily makes them immune!

Good peak for the football last night - however ITV made a huge mistake regardless of who was doing the feed. Surely they could have put a trailing apology on the bottom of the screen at least once during the 1st half apologising for missing the goal

"Due to human error we apologise for the break in transmission" - small things like that matter to viewers, epsecially the millions drinking heavy in the pubs. We were holding a party at home and people were fuming at the lack of acknowledgement until Chiles apology of sorts.

If broadcasters (BBC included) don't have contingency plans in place for such high profile live events then they should certainly consider having them.
