Ofcourse England still might progress but clearly gambling on getting to the second stage and quarters was just too much for anyone trying to sell commercials.

The BBC will be miffed though if England capitulate like it looks they might do. The pressure on England to win the third game is enormous and there needs to be a startling change in the team performance.

I don't support England, so its no big deal for me, but I can see everyone really getting annoyed at this point, they were even booing them afterr the match, which caused Rooney to say in the camera "Its great the fans are booing, great fans we have" something like that.

Blimey. Huge peak for the football - for whatever reason, weekday matches do seem to do better than weekend ones even if they are in the evenings. We saw that at the last WC too.

It doesn't look like BBC's allocation is going to pay off particularly well for them. A weekday afternoon group game, and a weekend afternoon last 16 tie, if they're lucky. It was always worth the risk for them, though - and at least they'll have the exclusive coverage of England getting knocked out.

They'll have been reckoning on England getting to the quarters (which would be pretty reasonable on past form) - that would mean though even then they might not hit the peaks of the ITV games, they'd have had 3 games to 2.

Good peak butt not exatly earth shattering - only up 1m on last week's Saturday night opener, and stil 1.2m down on the 2006 peak time group stage peak.

As for the results, it looks like the famous Curse of ITV has sunk Englands prospects again - and the BBC's!

Whats the famous curse of ITV?

After last night, the ratings for Wednesday will be the most interesting because people will want to know if we're through or not. I expect a lot of employers will have sick employees on Wednesday

Erm...

itvpresscentre: An enormous peak audience of 21.3 million viewers watched England v Algeria. The most watched tv event since Euro 2004 England v Portugal. - 21 minutes ago via web

Although I'm not quite sure if the last bit is on about the programme average or not?

Unfortunately, there's not much way to get out of a 2 hour A Level exam!

The "curse" is that England generally dont get far in competitions. ITV seem to know this and get most of the early matches - "promising" the BBC full coverage of the later matches. Suckers!!

Most will work around it. A lot have tv rooms or will let people work the hours on other days. This sickie story is just one of the 4 or 5 cliched stories that get dusted off by hacks every tournament.

Depends where you work e.g. if you're working with the public then employers won't be so lenient.

Well, its pretty much knife edge stuff, If England beat Slovenia they will qualify and if they beat them by more goals than the USA against Algeria then the BBC will have a huge peak time audience to look forward to. However, what should have been expected is now very much in doubt. England are very poor and if they dont get an early goal against Slovenia I think the pressure will kill them.

Given the peak I was expecting more than 14.3 million-presumably 21.3 million was a five minute peak? Curious to see regional news in second place-BBC's 7.30 to 10.00 schedule squashed flat.

Great for the Football ratings wise. BBC One obviously suffered, EastEnders held up as well as possible.

Big Brother also did OK all considering.

Is there any reason why the breakdown thing doesn't really add up? I mean if you look at the C4 breakdown when BB was on air, it just doesn't match the average.

Expected better for James Corden last night, given the massive lead in. Seems people weren't bothered and just switched off something of a hurry.

Difficult to say what the numbers might look like for the next match - though I'd say thats down to the time rather than disgust in the England performance. Secretly, this sort of anger and anguish is exactly what people love about the World Cup. English people (and the press) love nothing more than getting outraged about something - and England are the perfect opportunity.

Better than I expected for BB to be honest... i knew it would be down with the match, even though not directly against it, but then there was the discussion of the match during the first minutes of BB and then James Corden, and Im sure most people were out watching the match so wouldnt really watch BB.

Tbh i expected it to be around 2.2m.

Impressive 14.3m for the football. I have no time for peaks in a broadcast of that length, though.

Better than it could have been for EastEnders. Will be well over 6m in the officials which won't be dented by a massive switch-off/over at 7.26pm!

The Queen Victoria documentary repeat was a bad choice, though. No one would expect wonderful programming in oposition to an England match, but they could have come up with something better than that!

Actually I think you are right there. I do think people like to watch and moan. The audience that saw England go out of the Euros was considerable, but ratings have been subdued in the qualifying campaign for the Worlds. Essentially, at best England are a workmanlike team-if they are doing well its not usually with Brazil like style and ratings chug along-if they are bad like you say-people love something to bang on about.

HD shares are interesting.

MOTD Live: Slovenia v USA (14:45) BBC One (3.4 + 0.3 HD) = 8.1% share.

MOTD Live: Germany v Serbia (12:15) BBC One (2.7 + 0.2 HD) = 6.9% share.

World Cup Live: England v Algeria (18:30) ITV 1 (12.9 + 1.4 HD) = 9.8%.

Smaller shares for BBC HD which is available throughout the UK on DSAT (its biggest market), yet ITV HD is only available in England and Wales, but they get the highest HD share.

Also, Is STV HD included in the ITV1 HD figures?
