In hindsight the Ross 18 million deal has been so bad in so many ways for the BBC effectively preventing them from being a force in entertainment.

The Bleakley story is most viewed at present on the BBC site.

I don't follow the ratings part of this but my mate says a big step down for Bleakley from a show that gets 5mil a night to what ever GMTV gets. Do you guys think its a step down are the ratings that big between GMTV and The One Show.

The total amount of viewers are about the same. GMTV gets just under 1m across 6am-9.25am, who actually watches it all like they would The One Show? ITV say it reaches about 5m.

GMTV also makes the news itself quite often because of its interviews, so providing the same happens with the new show, Adrian & Christine will become even more high profile than they are now.

First Monday in September, thats when ITV normally launch new daytime shows and bring back This Morning/Loose Women (last year being the exception because of the bank holiday Monday).

Re the GMTV article coming out today- I think GMTV were planning to release it tomorrow but the BBC got in there first and claimed to withdraw the offer. I think Christine just decided she wanted to go to GMTV & ITV.

Isn't O'Grady now with doing a ITV Friday night show now reports of Wossy I don't know if I believe that. ITV are getting the check book out with Holly, Phil, Ant, Dec, Dermot already now signing Christine, Adrian, O'Grady.

If ITV can get the right vehicles for everyone, they can be a live show powerhouse. Once they've got that sorted then they can start investing in more expensive programming ie drama.

The problem I foresee is this wave of publicity we're seeing at the moment will have died well down by September.

It's a shame it can't launch sooner to capitalise on that but the timing is not ideal going into the summer and there's that small matter of a major football tournament underway occupying Adrian.

Still I am sure we can expect a huge marketing campaign nearer to the time.

I wonder what will happen to sports presenter Dan Lobb, who has only recently joined GMTV from Sky News in the past 6 months or so.

Adrian though is the only person in TV who insists on working a five day week. I agree though a Friday pairing is a good idea to get their understudies established with the audience. I don't think either of them though are particularly weekend light entertainment hosts.


You don't need hindsight to work that out - everyone but the BBC realised £18m for the host of a late night film show, late night chat show and weekend radio show was far too much.

If ITV do sign him though I think they've got to take the risk with a nightly chat show. It's a bit pointless if he just takes his Friday night show to ITV and basically does the same thing - it's really of little benefit to ITV. Give him a nightly chat show (Mon - Thu 10.35pm) and it's something new for both him and ITV1 and will generate more interest and perhaps bring an audience to a pretty much dead timeslot four nights a week rather than once a week.

you know ive previously said that a nightly 10:35 chat show would be a bad idea for ITV, but if anyone could pull it off, it would be Johnathon Ross.

He is probaly the 1 presenter we have, who could do a US style "Late night with..." show.

If Jonathan Ross goes to ITV, I'd expect his show to air on Fridays at 9pm, a bit like what's happening with Paul O'Grady. I doubt Jonathan Ross would want to do 5 day weeks, nearly all year round on ITV for far less money than he used to get for the BBC.

Excellent idea. But I don't know if Ross would be willing to commit to such a time consuming project, even though he's capable of pulling it off.

Then again, he no longer has the radio programme and movie show to front, so I guess he could maybe stretch to 4 nights a week of the chat show, with highlights or even Paul O'Grady on Friday nights.

Yeah he'll get the 9pm Friday slot, so I suspect they'll have a chatshow running in that slot pretty much all year round. Whilst he'd do very well at 10:35pm, he's too big a name for the slot as he'd be too expensive and I doubt he'd want to do it. They'd be better off getting someone like Dara O'Brien, but tbh a 10:35pm chatshow should be the least of ITV's worries at the moment.

Johnathon Ross rotating with Paul O'Grady and Benidorm would be a good Friday night ratings banker for ITV and would solve that huge problem. Thursday night would be even better for it and just run murder mystery on a Friday night.

John Stapleton is staying with GMTV and is meant to be Adrian's stand in when he's off for matches etc. It could be a good idea to keep Kate on and then its recognisable faces of the 'old' GMTV so the new show isn't too alien.

ITV's Friday nights would see an improvement if they did: 16 episodes each of Paul O'Grady and Jonathan Ross (in blocks of 8), Life Stories x 12 (in blocks of 6), and Benidorm over the year. They'd certainly get better numbers than shows like Dining Stars, Kitchen Burnout, Al Murray and Moving Wallpaper.

Where do the BBC get their next light entertainment presenters from, ask some.

There's along-standing tradition in this country to use comedians for such roles:

Bob Monkhouse, Bruce Forsyth, Michael Barrymore, Tom O'Connor, Jimmy Tarbuck, Barry Cryer, Roy Walker, Shane Ritchie, Bernard Manning.....


The tradition continues today:

Dara O'Briain, Michael McIntyre, Rob Brydon (Would I Lie To You?), Alexander Armstrong (Pointless - that a BBC2 daytime quiz, not a personal comment).... Jason Manford has just been given The One Show, John Bishop has a new series coming soon.....

There's a big pot of talent out there for the BBC to dip into. It's just a question of finding good formats.
