At Idol's peak its UK equivalent would have been about 7.5m for a final. While interesting to illustrate the differences (thanks to D.M.N for doing the calculations), it's a bit like comparing the ratings of British shows today to what they had 10-15 years ago.
Although when you see it as 4.85m, it makes certain statements seem bizzare. Jeff Zucker called it the "most impactful show in the history of television" and other network executives refer to it as The Death Star. What on earth would they do if shows were getting 50% shares like we see here!

“Also, the superbowls which attract from 40-60m lets say, is the only show that in UK terms would attract around 10-11m ish (??) which is what BGT gets... and the Friends Final's 52.5m is around 12-14m in UK?? Thats good
”
The Superbowl remains one of the few to buck the trend. In January it had 106m viewers which would be about 21m viewers to us.
US = UK TOP 5 SEASON 2009/10:
1. The Superbowl (CBS) - 106m = 21.2m
2. The Academy Awards (ABC) - 41.7m = 8.3m
3. Undercover Boss (CBS) - 38.65m = 7.7m
4. Winter Olympics (NBC) - 32.6m = 6.5m
5. American Idol (FOX) - 29.9m = 6.0m
