I love the show too, but I doubt it will grow much with iplayer or get recommissioned based on ratings tbh. Pity as last two episodes were gripping IMO. The trailer for next week, looks like it might wrap up as a one off series, though hard to know.

Let's look at it like this:

- BBC1 goes down to 2/3m when ITV1 has a show which gets 8/9/10m on.
- ITV1 goes down to 2/3m when BBC1 has a show which gets 4/5/6m on.

The first half hour of BGT isn't up to much, all you miss is the judges entrance and 1 or 2 of the lower profile acts.

Eastenders did very well yesterday, I suspect if it hadn't increased its audience then Britains's Got Talent may have been on a par with Monday night as the first half hour must of been around 8million or so. Does anyone have a breakdown for the show?

It depends on the quality of the main show whether people will turn over or not. Last year it was getting 1-2m with about 1m the year before. Xtra Factor is the same, that is part of the reason why they reformatted it after series 4 (ie the arrival of Holly and the show suddenly becoming quite quirky).

I wonder if ITV will continue with Corrie tonight in light of these shootings in Cumbria.

I've never seen a soap been pulled within 12 hours of going to air, and I'm not sure what they could do.

Depending on what happens though (not nice to speculate about this kind of event), we could see some schedule changes this afternoon if it turns into a massacre.

The sound of air escaping from the massively over-inflated Cowell talent show balloon.

No traction whatsoever. Stuck at a c10m overnight as it has been throughout this entire series. That's a MASSIVE drop year on year when the nightly semi-finals were getting 14-15m - and that during one of the hottest weeks of 2009.

If GeorgeS thought SCD was "tanking" after dropping 0.5m or so on certain shows last autumn, then I'd like to know how he describes BGT's performance.

If ITV can no longer guarantee its customers a 14-19m audience for its twice-yearly Cowell-fest, then there could be trouble ahead as the Cowell Supertanker heads for the rocks in a fog of over-exposure.

This is going to sound insensitive but I don't see why TV channels should ever have to cancel programmes or even consider it in light of what is happening now. I'm sure people can distinguish between real life and fiction.

wasn't EE pulled the day that Tony Brown stood down and Cameron took over? Or was it just delayed? Just heard that news now, how terrible, hope they get him.

They could extend BGT by another 30 minutes?

I think you'll find they were getting 12-13m. Don't compare overnights from 2010 with the 2009 averages.

EE was pulled in the days after the 7/7 attacks as the episodes contained a fire.

These episodes contain characters being held at gun point which is pretty close to the bone with what seems to be happening today.

I've been reading over the thread since yesterday and I noticed that the soap averages have increased since last year. In particular, I'm really pleased to see how Emmerdale has increased. With the EastEnders live episode and the hype around Archie's killer storyline, a big increase was expected for it but Emmerdale hasn't really had a massively promoted storyline since the start of the year. To see it have an average of 600,000 extra viewers compared to last year is extremely impressive and I believe it reflects the high quality of Emmerdale at the moment.

As for last night, really good for ITV1. 10m for BGT is still impressive and Corrie is doing well also. I think anyone predicting that Corrie will grow to over 13m+ viewers by Friday is overestimating considerably, probably so they can point out how disappointing Corrie did compared to their expectations by the end of the week. I can see it maybe edging 11m viewers by Friday, but certainly nothing more.

Well done to EastEnders for holding up strongly against BGT.

BGT and XF reached over exposure last year. Look what happened to Big Brother the minute it became over exposed. Today is one of the warmest days of the year and it is only going to get hotter this week- ITV must be worried about that.

Looking further into the year, X Factor always rates slightly lower than the preceding BGT so its looking like X Factor may be getting its lowest ratings this year for quite some time.

I suggested this yesterday, ITV need to consider whether they want these shows long term or short term. If its long term, they need to make big decisions about the future of the shows and they will have to sacrifice a lot of money. IMO X Factor and BGT should alternate each year in the autumn, running BGT alongside The Royal Variety Show when its ITVs turn to air it. To replace BGT in the spring, there are quite a few cheap options. They could move I'm a Celebrity, they could buy Celebrity Big Brother or with Andrew Lloyd Webber rumoured to be moving to ITV, they could literally do a like for like replacement with a West End search show.

Consistent for BGT and Corrie - if not spectacular. That would very much be the theme of the series to be honest. ITV might be feeling a touch underwhelmed by it, but they'll surely have prepared themselves for lower numbers than last year. It hasn't recaptured the hype - partly thats the show but I do think its struggling to generate newspaper attention because of the preoccupation with the World Cup too.

EastEnders held up superbly when starting in line with BGT at 7.30pm. As others have said, it would have made sense to have yesterdays extra half hour before the normal slot rather than after it. Holby City was more badly damaged and Luther was mauled - mind you, its numbers have been going down all series. Though its overall average will be alright, I think the trend will count against another series.


Fabulous for BBC Thee. The WC compilation did well in a slot which is normally very weak - but against BGT on a young-skewing channel, you would have thought it would be pummelled.


The couple of weeks of very bad weather at the start of the year had something to do with it. It boosted the averages and pulled a lot more people back into watching the soaps. It seems like the shows have done a good job of hanging on to them.

EastEnders did very well last night.

BGT is down and I'm sure ITV will be somewhat underwhelmed. Nevertheless it's doing far better than their usual output ever does so not much room for complaint really.

A year-on, year-off approach would just kill momentum for both shows and wouldn't extend their time on air. Pretty much every other country in the world airs Got Talent and Idol/X Factor/Fame Academy.

And it's not the case that XF rates lower than BGT in the autumn. It was last year but not in 2008. Depending on how this series goes, I could see this one doing better than BGT (unless ITV start scheduling it at 6.30pm, spread over 4 hours on one night with a new hour long episode of Emmerdale in between).

Vs the last Tuesday show, it's down a pretty hefty 20% and up 17% from the last pre-Boyle Tuesday. Taking into account the impact of the scheduling and considering the series has been down 10% pretty much since the start, I don't see that the long term outlook has really changed a whole lot from last week.

BBC News so far ahead of Sky News with their coverage of the Cumbrian shootings it is incredible.

You can tell $ky are cutting costs when the best coverage they can provide is one correspondent, a simple graphic showing a map of the area and locations involved, one low-res capture and just repeating what is being written on all the wires.

Shocking story though. Wouldn't be surprised if Corrie is pulled tonight if it contains characters being held at gunpoint as described earlier.

Robbie, the average for the live semis last year was 12.7m. No semi averaged 14-15m, so I'm not sure where you're getting your figures from .

Anyway, decent enough for BGT and Corrie last night to hold 10m. Once again, BGT was down about 20% compared to the equivalent semi last year and it looks like it'll continue that way for the remainder of the week.

The performance of the night was EastEnders - 6.2m against BGT is very respectable and a new record for the BBC3 repeat as well. Holby and Luther both suffered but I guess that was inevitable. With its audience dropping every single week, Luther looks like a dead cert to be cancelled.

Disappointing rating for ITV News at Ten. It was bound to be down from last year, but even the bulletins after I'm a Celebrity which rated worse than BGT were rating better IIRC.
