I'm just watching Eastenders, and Ian has just sacked Pat because she didnt tell him about Bobbys birth certificate. Just wondering - why the hell does no one in soaps end up in court for unfair or constructive dismissal!!??

Why did Laura not sue when Ian sacked her? Why did Shirley not sue when Andy took over the bookies?

Surely, in this 'compensation culture' we live in - someone would have cottened on & at least made a threat to sue??!!

The reason why most are employed in soapland is so that the writers don't have to deal with the inherent complexities of a so-called 'Arthur Fowler' situation.

The original point made in this thread is valid.

You are just not meant to question or read in between the lathered lines.

Why do people in soap land always work within walking distance from work.

Take sarah in corrie.... she only has 5 seconds if that to get home from work cos she lives right accross from the cafe.

You have to be employed for at least a year before you can claim unfair dismissal and lets be honest, who lasts that long in the job in soapland?

It doesn't matter how long you are in a job, you can complain about dismissal or sacking to ACAS or Citizens Advice. It's a myth that temporary or short term workers have no rights, and a myth that Soapland seems happy to perpetuate.

Ian could not sack Pat immediately for not telling him about Bobby - it's not even a work related issue! The only grounds he could have had were that Pat withheld information from him. In that case, he would have had to investigated the matter, and spoken to Pat, who had the option to have a colleague pesent during the investigation. As none of that happened, Pat has every right to take Ian to an industrial tribunal. But of course, that doesn't fit with any upcoming storyline, so a simple "you're sacked, I can't trustya" will suffice.
Unless of course, Pat didn't sign a contract with Ian,in which case he's in the brown stuff anyway for not providing employment details to his employees, which Pat would be, as his records would show he's been paying her a wage and (hopefully) making the necessary Inland Revenue deductions and payments.
Whatever, EE is in need of advisors.

How many times did she retire over the years to probably go and live with 'our Gordon', yet always seemed to come back.

Those old enough may remember 2 such incidents. One when Betty was attacked by a mugger, she said she was going to quit. Another I think was when Bet Gilroy became landlady.

She must be 80 if she's a day. I'm sure when Betty finally goes, a blue plaque will appear above The Rovers !

When Shirly in EE was sacked she did say she was going to take Andy to a tribunal about unfair dismissal. Then she was told exactly what type of person Andy was so she decided not to do that but mounted a protest outside the shop. When nobody went in beacuse of her protest eventually Andy paid her off and she went to New Zealand to visit her son.
In Corrie Sunita did go to get legal advise as to Dev sacking her, she went to Maya to get adice remember? I thought it was really funny cause she knew it wa Maya who forced Dev to sack her.

But other than those two exceptions I have to agree employment in soap land is so unrealistic its crazy. Everyone works within 5 mins walk of where they live and if not well then the only time their work place is featured is if its part of a stoy line, case in point Todd and Carl. They get sacked constantly for no reason other than the boss just feels like it.
Yes I wonder how old Betty is Corrie is? She never seems to get any older but is always going on about how she should be retired, at home putting her feet up. Yet she never does. Betty also left to live with Gordon and his wife Caroline in Wimbeldon one time before, she put her house on the market and took off. Then a while later she came back to the Rovers under the guise of having to do something with the estate agent about the sale of the house. While there she got talking to Emily and told her that Caroline didn't want her there and she was virtually prisoner in her room. So she left and cam back to Corrie. Then another time she took off to live with them (or maybe it was for Christmas holidays or something) and when she got to their house they had gone off on a cruise for the holidays and a neighbour had to tell Betty that they were gone. I don't think they like her a lot do they? When her house burned down and she asked Gordon could she go to stay with him until her house was repaired his wife implied that Betty had started the fire herself so she would have an excuse to move in with them. I think she ended up staying in the Rovers with Shelly.
Which brings me onto another point. How many bedrooms are there in the Rovers? and the Vic in EE, it doesn't look like there are that many yet so many people seem to live in these pubs????

Shirley once asked in the cafe, "Pat, do you know anything about employment law?" (as featured on Harry Hill's TV Burp) - I bet Pat wished she did now

I think that might refer to the rumpus-to-be involving Martin and fisticuffs etc.

Well it was a minimum one year for a claim for unfair dismissal when I did my employment law exam.

Betty in Corrie is around 83 or 84 years old. When she was young she vas very pretty and had a lovely singing voice.

Yep, the DTI site backs this up. In its list of people who cannot make a claim for unfair dismissal it has people who have not completed one year's continuous employment. There is a long(ish) list of people who can make a claim even if they have not been employed for 12 months but those circumstances cover issues like being sacked for being pregnant, seeking to enforce the minimum wage, seeking paternity leave and stuff like that.
