How do you see the character of Dorothy?

Been reading so much of how folk think which girl suits the character of Dorothy but how do you see her.

She is a gauche farm girl from Kansas being brought up by older aunt and uncle. She isn't very wise in the world and her only real friend is Toto and one of the neighbours is threatening to have him put down. At the start she is scared enough to run away -she feels that she hasn't got a real home.

When she lands in Oz she is totally bewildered - rabbit in headlights ( where have I heard that before?) and she wants desperately to get find a real home. She grows just as much through the story as any of the others.

So, we have four girls - who fits?

Steph is so bright and bubbly (sweet Charity maybe?)- a bit too jolly to be Dorothy and she isn't too good with dogs.

Lauren is a professional and sophisticated performer but too knowing (she could do Wicked or even Carousel- more resilience, more determination and oomph)

Danielle - sings well and is a competent actress but I feel that her acting doesn't come from her gut and is a little too stage schooly ( I could actually see her doing Rizzo from Grease)

Sophie is sweet, nailve, vulerable but has ability (and ability for comedy -I saw flashes of Lucille Ball in the South Pacific number last night)

So all really talented girls - all suitable for roles in the West End -but we are casting for Dorothy and personally I feel Sophie is the nearest fit

Personally I don't think any of them are the typical JG Dorothy-which in my opinion shouldn't be messed with! I don't think it was for Maria, Joe or Nancy! So I judge by personality of the girls and vocals, acting etc I guess...

Thank you! That is who she remind me of, I loved Sophie in that, she played her character well, as I feel she was playing the friend of the woman(Steph) who had been wronged by the man, trying to calm Steph down, but going along with the song.

Anyway back to your question, I haven't seen Wizard of Oz in years, but in my head Dorothy is vulnerable, innocent and alone apart from Toto, but she's not dumb she as her wits about her and she is very caring person. I feel Sophie will be able capture all this, that's why I want her to be Dorothy.

There was a book before the JG film - JG was one interpretation -no matter who does it the core character is still the same

I think we've been told enough times on OTR that dorothy doesnt have to be a JG stereotype, and could imo be less naive/innocent, esp as it will be an older girl playing her than Judy.

Obviously, she still needs to have cause to run away, and to want to go home when she was in Oz, but that doesnt always have to be fear - Odysseus wanted to go home too - and I think, at some point, everyone does. It isn't home sickness as much as identity, belonging, imo, and I think any remaining girls could play Dorothy.

I personally prefer Danielle for the role because she's my favourite actor of the series - idk where you get the idea she's stage schooly, considering she's only had (normal) school tuition, and OTR was her first real audition. I actually think it would be easier for her to play Dorothy than some of the roles she's done in songs (Mambo, Popular,) as the clips of her VT show her being generally modest and a bit shocked by it all!

Sophie is very striking with her red hair no matter how far away from the stage you would know which was dorothy ,I think she would be perfect for the role.
