Owl City- 1 Hit Wonders?
Ok Fireflies was #1 in USA,Australia,UK, Ireland etc but how well has the album done in all these countries and how are the follow up singles doing? Umbrella Beach is out this week- how's it doing?

Umbrella Beach is a HUGE flop. 'Fireflies' has sold around 2 million copies in America, plus is the 2nd biggest selling song in the UK right now, has been certified Gold/Platinum in practically every country it was released in and yet the second single has failed to even dent the top 100 on iTunes.
It's the wrong single choice imo. 'Vanilla Twilight' or 'Saltwater Room' are way better, but probably wouldn't have done much difference in the charts. At the very least, the song SHOULD boost the album back into the top 40 but even I doubt that.

The history of music is littered with one hit wonders and Owl City were always likely to join them.
As the above says though- what a tune to have a one hit wonder with. |

1-hit wonder? Possibly. Why? Because Umbrella Beach is a STUPID choice of single. I have the album and UB is one of the weakest songs, whoever thought it a good idea to release it has made a very dumb decision and I am not surprised in the slightest that it has flopped. Vanilla Twilight was the much more sensible choice.

Well, his album did quite well. Not exactly a flop. His record label will give him a third album, because OE did so much better than MID. I've always considered Owl City to be an albums artist. His shows have all sold out, and he was invited to do a song for the Alice In Wonderland soundtrack. I don't think he's a one-hit wonder, just Fireflies is still popular, the album sold well, and UB is a weak single choice. I think he should have released Vanilla Twilight, or maybe The Bird and the Worm (it's adorable!), and had two singles released before releasing the album. It would also help if Adam involved himself in his music videos a bit more. I know he doesn't want to be famous and be a celebrity, but if he wants to be successful, he's got to let his fans get to know him. It is nice to know there is a bit of humanity behind his songs, which can be quite electro/robotic.

I'd assume Owl City never intended to be a big artist. He seemed a word of mouth type of performer. Remember this wasn't his first single of his first album, he didn't have mainstream sucess with album 1. Fireflies was something that was jumped upon and pushed out. He'll keep on making music and release it and probably become more a cult hit then mainstream

I think the album has only sold around 100K, or maybe much less. It peaked at #7 but album sales this year have been dreadful and it's only spent a further four or five weeks in the top 40 after that.

Wikipedia are quoting 100K from May 11th but considering how unreliable it is i'd take it with a pinch of salt.

Vanilla Twilight was already released as a single late last year. In a way, I'm glad they didn't re release it as it would end up on our tape at work and I'd have to leave the shop floor because it makes me cry.
I'm 40, and what the hell is this?

Albums don't sell if all the songs on it are the same.

Funny that, because I recall Cheryl Cole's album being last years best seller. Arctic Monkeys' album got to number one last year too. Same goes for JLS.

I think we all know Cheryl and JLS don't sell records based on their music, and I disagree about arctic despite the fact that they're overrated.

Fireflies was a brilliant lead single, but Umbrella Beech is a good song but weak single, Fireflies should of been followed up by Vanilla Twilight and then Cave In (so into this song), and then finished with Hello Seattle Or Bird And The Worm. TBH The album is brilliant and is my fourth favourite off all time

He isnt really an artist that cares about the charts though, he's got another project coming up and will eventually release more stuff under the pseudonym 'Owl City'

I'm seeing him live in November
![]() I like him, a lot, because Ocean Eyes and Maybe I'm Dreaming are such fantastic albums, and he seems very sweet. Somebody else got me the ticketthough, but I'm looking forward to it. |

I think they're pretty terrible. And I don't see what is so great about Fireflies.
