I've definitely read before about some popular horror story/film or other where one critic's rather imaginitive interpretation of the relationship between the two male leads was one of unspoken homosexual desire, with their quest being to 'destroy' the female coming between them... wasn't sure if it was Salem's Lot but your theory certainly angles it that way!
