Doubt very much that Ronaldo is.. hes dated a string of stunning looking women. Sergio Ramos on the otherhand could very well be (just a hunch).
The % of sportsmen that are gay would be much lower than the national average imo... purely from the fact gay men participate in sport less than other activities. I dont think im generalising here (and im sure there could be a source to back this up). My own cousin was an example of this. There obviously are gay sportsmen in the closet.. they could never come out though (unless retired like Gareth Thomas) as its a macho environment. Some in the closet gay sports men and women are likely to be loners, not wanting to draw attention to their sexuality and therefore have more time to spend dedicating their lives to sport. Two scenarios for you to think about. |

sure the female singer wasn't whitney no way is celine gay have you read all her interviews been with her husband since she was a teenager alicia keys it's a well known fact.
There was a book who's hiding in hip hop and one of them was supposed to be alicia keys before she made it big. And used to dress in a tomboyish way soon as cameras were on dressed femme queen latifah does the same. I've always thought alicia is at least bi and that her marriage is a cover same with jada pinkett smith. |

A large proportion of straight men drop out of sport in adulthood because they gain other interests and sport becomes less important in their lives like dating women, weekend socialising and getting a full-time job to buy a car, nice clothes and a bachelor pad to impress the women.

If you replace Women with Men in the first paragraph of your comment you'd also be describing Gay Men.
Not too sure that most Gay Men and Women are loners either? We're also discussing closeted gays, not gay men and women in general, I never suggested they were loners. |

Think back to your childhood
How many of the boys who were obsessed with football grew up to be gay? It's not some kind of latent homophobia to suggest that less gay men are into sport than straight men, anecdotal evidence will back this up |

It's not some kind of latent homophobia to suggest that less gay men are into sport than straight men, anecdotal evidence will back this up How many talented schoolboy footballers decided not to pursue football as a career? I'd say more than actually take it up as a career. How can you come out with statements that there are a lower proportion of gays in sport than proportion of gays in the population, just based on your experiences at school? Considering there are very few out gay schoolboys, then you're just counting the ones that were out and the ones you suspected were gay due to them being effeminate. There are also many gay football teams, so there obviously are gay men out there who grew up obsessed with football, so much so that as an adult they joined a gay football team. They are the out ones, the number of closet ones increases how many gays have an interest in football. http://www.gfsnleague.co.uk/ |

Andrew Stone insists that he isn't gay but I reckon he likes people to think he is.

Assuming 25 players per team, 92 (ish) pro teams in England, that's 2300+ players. Based on a figure of 5% being gay or bi that would be about 115 gay or bi professional footballers lol. |

Obviously going to be some gay footballers. I just don't think the figure will be particularly high. The idea that every starting XI will contain a gay player is bollocks for a start.

You're role in this thread seems to be to say "Oh, that person seems too masculine to be gay. Oh, that person seems too feminine to be straight". I know many sporty, masculine gay guys. Likewise, I know some less masculine straight guys. So, how does my anecdotal evidence back up your view? |

Of people I know, precisely one.
1.) an entirely fair and reasonable representation of the people you know/the situation as you perceive it around you. 2.) people don't always tell other people who they really are. |

Footballers generally are the macho jack-the-lad types, there will be fewer than in other professions. |

There were strong rumours for some time around Justin Berfield (Reece from Malcolm In The Middle). He gave up acting (the spotlight?) in his early 20s to be a producer. I certainly wouldn't mind if he was, phwooar

The Andrew Stone debate pisses me off. People think he just HAS to be gay, because of his feminine nature. It's entirely possible that he is straight, I believe he is. Being gay means you are primarily attracted to people of the same sex. That's it. Mannerisms (be it masculine or feminine) depend on the individual. I'm not saying feminine gays don't exist. But because they're more noticeable, some people seem to think that they are the true representation of all gay guys. They are not. Not even close. Take Gay Pride. It makes me embarrassed to be gay, I never plan on attending. It doesn't make me proud because it reinforces these negative misconceptions. I'm gay. I like playing football and exercising. I drink beer. I'm not a fashion student, I'm not into dancing, I hate tight clothes. Oh, I must be straight, despite being attracted to other males more than girls. Sorry, my mistake. Sorry for the long-winded rant. But generalisations based on sexual orientation set me off. |

This word again. For the life of me, I can't work out why, in 2012, being macho must equal heterosexuality.
