Also people in general have a mistrust of stating anything in surveys that could be traced back to them. Add to that people from communities where homosexuality is not only frowned upon but a disowning offense or even worse and the numbers will be higher.

You can factor in bisexuals as well and those that have and will experiment without ever telling anyone. I am not suggesting for a moment that the vast bulk of any population is not made up of red-blooded heterosexuals and very genuine heterosexual couples who have children and marry because they love one another - but that these surveys can be taken with a grain of salt as many people will not admit to events in their past, instances of attraction towards the same sex or not being out to their families.

Totally unreliable figures: but based on my facebook friends (bearing in mind I'm bisexual and only have 190 friends on FB...) 13.1% of my friends identify as gay / lesbian or bisexual.

The 10% figure was fake, for a start. It originated from the Kinsey studies which suggested that 10% of people had had at least one year of their life where they had only had homosexual experiences, no heterosexual ones. This does not mean that all of that 10%, or even the majority of them, would see themselves as gay. Many of them had had some homosexual experiences in their early teens long before they'd done anything with the opposite sex.

I've always thought the figure of 10% sounded way too high : if it was really correct, it would mean there were 3 million gay men in the UK which seems very hard to believe (the fact that showbiz is full of gay men is a very misleading indicator).

Oh my god. I didn't know this. Won't be able to look at him the same way again. That must be an...interesting...thing to deal with.

If people are in the closet, that means they have not announced they are gay, so how are you meant to know?
