Home Cinema HDMI Handshake problem
Hi all, and HELP.
I have a home cinema setup, consisting of :- Onkyo TX-NR905 amp Panasonic BluRay Pioneer DVD Sky+ HD (Original pace version) Xbox 360 Sony LCD telly Panasonic PT-AE4000E projector I've had this setup for a while (minus the projector) and all was working well, even with an old projector. However, I finally upgraded the projector to the one above and here the problems start. All of my hardware is connected through the amp using HDMI where possible, or component. They all play fine through the TV. However, which I switch to the projector I can't get any video from the Sky+ HD box. I've tried changing the output resolutions on both the sky box and amp, but with no luck. I'm running a 20m HDMI 1.4 cable from the amp to projector, but that doesn't seem to be the issue as it works fine when connected directly to the Sky box, but nothing when connected through the amp. I've even tried swapping the cable between sky box and amp, but no change. Does anyone have any suggestions? After a couple of hours of messing around it's starting to drive me nuts! Ta Martin |

Might be worth ringing Panasonic up to see if they have any compatibility issues with Sky HD and the PJ.
I had problems with my PJ, everything worked except the PS3, I ended up sending the PJ away for a firmware upgrade. When it came back everything was working OK. |

Hi
I did read about some problems with SkyHD and Panasonic TVs. However, if I plug my long hdmi lead directly between the SkyHD and projector it works fine. With it connected via the amp it works on the TV (and also worked on my old 720p projector) but no picture on the new one. I've even tried swapping the hdmi lead which connects the sky box to the amp, but no change. Totally baffled |

There's a good chance this is a Sky box issue. Try doing a firmware update on the Sky box. I've posted on this before so use the forum search facility, or go to Google.
Come back and let us know how you are getting on. |

A HDMI problem with the skyHD box wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.
I did a forced update just on the offchance i'd missed an update, but still no change. I've also tried connecting the projector to the amp with a very short HDMI cable. No luck As the Sky box is one of the early Thomson ones that seem to suffer power problems too, and seems to be having issues recording when the disk is less than 50% free i did think about upgrading it. Got a letter from sky today offering me one of the new 1TB boxes cheap, so might go for that. Do you think that might fix the problem? Probably going to do the upgrade anyway (next month) |

I've had two of my customer's systems develop problems caused by the Sky HD boxes. One was a TV & projector system (Pana 58" TV & Sim2 HT380), the other just a projector (Cineversum Blackwing II). In both cases removing the Sky box and doing firmware refeshes elsewhere cured the problems. Then reflashing the HD box firmware before reinstalling seems to have kept things stable. I've also come across a fair few peple on forums with similar issues.
Replacing the Sky box seems the most cost effective and simplest solution. |

Thanks Chris.
I went along that train of thought too, so have ordered a new HD box - 1TB version for £149 with free install seemed too good to turn down. I'll let you know how i get on when it arrives on Monday. |

I would still be inclined to look at the PJ compatibility, but with the amp rather than Sky.
Sky works when connected directly to the TV and PJ, but as soon as you root it through the amp the picture fails to show on the PJ but not the TV. Everything worked OK with the old PJ. Thinking back to when I sent my PJ back, this was a compatibility issue with the PS3, but only when it was going via my amp. I'd give Panasonic a ring, Onkyo too. I've just ordered a 1Tb HD box too, looks like a great bit of kit and will solve my recording space issue. I hope it solves the problem. Please let us know how it all goes. |

Thought i'd give you an update....
Just received and installed my new 1TB Sky+HD box, and it works fine with the amp and projector. So, don't know if there was just a problem with my old box (it was having the other typical issues probably related to power supply), or whether there was a general compatibility issue that has been fixed with the newer box. Either way I'm happy as everything in the setup is now working as it should. Thanks for everyone who gave me some suggestions. Martin |
