Was David Tennant generally unpopular here?

I've read several threads where people have made some quite derogatory remarks about DT.

I always thought he was very good and was quite surprised they managed to find someone to fill his shoes so well.

Is the impression he wasn't popular accurate or is it just a small minority of posters slagging him off at every opportunity?

He was very popular on here with most people, there will always be a vocal minority that disagree though.

The way I look at it is we have been blessed to have three quality actors in the role since it's returned in 2005. I did admittedly prefer Chris Eccleston to David Tennant, and I may ultimately like Matt Smith better than either of them (too early to say for sure though), but they have all been bloody good in their own ways.

He was fine as far as I'm concerned. He loved his job and brought a lot of excitement to the role.

My faves are Tom Baker and Chris Ecc... But all the past actors who played the Doc brought something to the role and had their moments.

We all criticise way too much and too often on this forum!

I couldn't tell you, as I joined Digital Spy after DT's tenure.
I did like him as an actor in other programs (like Quatermass and Takin' Over the Asylum)
and he seems to be a nice bloke in real life. But I was never a big fan of his Doctor, because
he was consistantly portrayed as a cliched Hollywood action hero (look at VOTD and
POTD).

I never had a problem with David Tennant, thought he was an excellent Doctor as is Matt Smith proving to be as well. What annoyed me was the people who slagged off Matt Smith before they even saw him because they couldn't accept anyone else but Tennant in the role, though this was agreeably a small minority.

That happens every time the Doctor regenerates

Yeah. After "Power of the Daleks", the Radio Times got letters complaining that Troughton "looked like Coco the Clown" and that "no-one will
watch Doctor Who anymore".

This is true but sometimes I wish people would see things through before they criticise. This series, for example, not quite up to scratch for me yet, but I won't make an overall judgement until I see the remaining episodes because the previous season didn't really get going until half way through. It's the same when a new Doctor starts, people should watch first and judge afterwards rather than they other way round.

But that sort of logical, open-minded attitude gets in the way of a good lynching.

Only been posting here a short time but I used to read the forum during series 4 and it seems to me he is well loved, in the same way as he is in the wider fan community.

He was a brilliant doctor, perfectly cast at the perfect time. Any minor missteps or flaws in his performance were to me more down to the writers rather than Tennant as an actor.

For me he was a giant and when he was good he was untouchable and even transcended the material. Just re-watch that scene in the Gate room in TEOT2 with Wilf....utterly amazing performance. He captured some pretty extreme emotions and there was not one false note. The way he went from relief to anger to resignation and then quiet dignity in the space of a few minutes- there arent many on earth who could have pulled that off as Tennant did.

For that moment and many others I will always love him as the doctor even if I 'prefer' Matts portrayl so far.

Well I can only speak for myself, and I absolutely loved David's Doctor. A marvellous portrayal, full of energy and verve. I think we've been spoilt all over since 2005 frankly, but yeah for me David was absolutely amazing, and never less than a phenomena in the role.

I loved David Tennant as the Doctor and don't think anyone, however good, will knock him off my top spot. I don't think he'd have won awards for his take on the role if he hadn't been very popular.

But the beauty and cotinued interest in the programme is due to the regular changes of cast, even if you gel more with certain actors in the role than others.

haer hear...

I am a big fan of the Tenth Doctor, considering that I was not going to give him a chance after CE had left. Since then thanks to his protrayal, I began to watch Classic series, and found even more Doctors to enjoy! For me Tennant is a fantastic actor, didn't really know him before Doctor Who, and now it seems hard to imagine why the hell I didn't considering the work he has done.

Over all I agree with Muttley that we have been really lucky to have three fantastic actors in the Role....heck...forget that....eleven fantastic actors in the role...Splendid fellows all of them!!!

That was before my time so I'll have to take your word for that

Bloody hell!I was about to write down my thoughts on DT but you've just summed up my feelings perfectly!

I think Tennant is an incredibly diverse actor and played an emotional Doctor beautifully but I too prefer the 'quirky' vibe that Matt Smith brings but, as an earlier post stated, we should be thankful we've been fortunate enough to have 3 wonderfully gifted actors in succession that have played their part in the Doctor's long tale.

I don't think too many really have a problem with DT but more the blinkered DT fans that REFUSE to try and accept a new Doctor.

David Tennant was greatly loved on DS and despite a small but vocal minority he remains so. Sadly the final Dr Who Specials were disappointing (aside from the Waters of Mars) and rather ruined what had been an excellent run of stories for a great actor

Couldn't stand him. Nothing to do with Tennant himself, who seems to be a nice enough bloke, and he was superb as John Smith in the Human Nature two parter. I just loathed his Doctor. Whether it was the performance, the writing or a combination of the two, the character continually grated on me-smug, arrogant, frequently silly beyond belief and just not the Doctor as played by the (various) actors I grew up with. He just wasn't the Doctor, for me. Smith fits the role perfectly, though.

There's a BBC archive thingy that recently quoted the letters they received back then.

Although i wasn't a big fan of DT i understand why some people did. He's appeal was to a wider audience i think rather than the hard core Who fans(although i wouldn't call myself a hard core fan). I just like CE and MS more, i wouldn't say they were better, i just liked there take of The Doctor more.

I absolutely loved DT as the Doctor he was able to make a bad script watchable. He's in my top 3 of Doctors Pertwee & Baker. I'm getting to like MS but I doubt that for me he will be better than DT, Pertwee & Baker.

We get threads about people who want him back pretty much every week, so no.

For me, CE was "my" Doctor. Then DT usurped CE and I've loved him ever since. I think that's why I'm struggling to connect with MS as I connected with DT very early on in series 2 and I am waiting for the same to happen, but many episodes in, I'm still waiting

But to answer the OP, I don't think DT was/is unpopular here (by the majority anyway )

You're not alone. DT was the Doctor for me - there was just something about his portrayal. I enjoyed CE in the role first, and still think he was brilliant, but he never captured my attention and suspended my belief in the way Doctor ten did. Everything just gelled completely for me. He was very popular with most people I know.

.

But no one is under any obligation to carry on with the show if they don't want to. That's their prerogative.
