If you can smell other cat's wee round the catflap so can Charlie. Try washing it off regularly (if you don't already). Use a solution of biological detergent as that will kill the smell.

Not sure how you are wiping his urine outside, but it would be effective to put some of the soiled litter from his tray onto the earth in the garden as that will maintain his scent profile.

We did wash it off the other day but Charlie still refused to go out so I was hoping his wee (mopped up from the litter tray with kitchen towel!) wiped about outside might reassure him he's still got a "presence" out there IYSWIM.

Did you use biological detergent or a specific odour eliminator to clean it up? Most other cleaners will not extinguish the underlying smell so Charlie would still smell it even if you thought the smell had gone.

But I wouldn't expect that to result him going out immediately, there will be many other smells out there that he is aware of but you wouldn't pick up. It will take time for him to regain confidence. It is a good step forward that he is using the litter tray rather than your carpet, it may take some time before he toilets outdoors reliably again.

I am a bit confused re mopping up his urine, surely the litter had absorbed it (which is why I suggested distributing some urinated litter in the borders).

Anyway sounds like he is making good progress.

Why don't you wipe some of your own wee around the garden? That would scare the other blighters off! Mind you, the neighbours might escalate as well.

No didn't use bio liquid as use powder so will have to buy some. As for mopping urine, I use some specially made plastic bags in his litter box and he'd scratched thru them so some urine was in the bottom between the bag and the tray so I used that. He had a sniff outside earlier and was having a good sniff where I'd wiped his wee - I'm sure he looked at me with a "but I didn't "go" there!?!" look on his face!

sorry I probably phrased that wrongly - as long as it is biological it makes no difference whether powder or liquid, as you dilute it anyway.
