Just a quick question, which network does 3 use when out of their own 3G coverage?

Each to their own!

Had nothing but dropped calls and coverage holes with 3. Will never think of returning, especially with their poor handset selection.

I just left 3 after only 2 months, because off poor call quality and dropped calls. I had the following conversation with the guy giving me my PAC code:

"What handset do you have?"
"Nexus One"
"Is it a 3 handset?"
"No, I didn't get it from you"
"Ah, well that will explain the dropped calls as not all phones are compatible with our network"
"No, you have a GSM network and I have a GSM phone"
"Yes, but the 3G network is only a small part of the specification"
"3G is part of the GSM standard, I have a GSM phone"

He wasn't being an idiot he was correct. You need to buy a phone from 3 if they are your network.

Agree about the dropped calls on 3 but to clarify, 3G is not and never has been part of the GSM standard. 3G used in the UK is UMTS an entirely different standard. Still the Nexus One should have no problems as it has UMTS and GSM spec included as standard.

Orange UK (GSM 1800Mhz) carry all 3 calls outwith their (UMTS 2100Mhz) network which is shared between 3UK & T-Mobile (Mobile Broadband UK). 3UK are the only company in the UK that does not have their own GSM network in addition to 3G and is the only one that relies on a domestic roaming arrangment with Orange.

If you needed to buy your phone from 3, why do they do sim only contracts and also supply free payg sims to people with compatible 3g phones?

I had one of the very first 3 phones. (They had two phones initially and I had one of them). It wasn't UMTS though, it was WCDMA. Said so on the back of the phone.

Obviously its rediculous to think that you need a 3 phone to use the 3 network, thats just rubbish.

My iphone works on three but when I called them for help with not recieving calls a few weeks back, they refused the speak to me and I had the same sort of conversation as posted above!

That's the same thing.

On a more general point. The bloke from 3 wasn't being an idiot. The only way to guarantee a handset will work properly on a network is to buy one which has been tested by the network.
Because each network, uses different equipment, you do sometimes get handsets which aren't 100% compatible.
The most recent example on 3 was the Nokia N900, which needed a firmware update to work on 3. There is also the issue with non 3 handsets not having the correct security certificates to make use of 3's free apps and to fully access Planet 3.
