It seems that Rory will be staying around for a while, so I think we can safely say that he has now joined that elite minority group, the Doctor's male companions.

I've worked out that there have been fifteen male companions and they are listed below. Yes, I know a good case can be made for suggesting that some on the list are not actually companions at all, but I am using the term "companion" in its loosest possible sense.

I have listed the male companions in order of preference:-

1. Ian Chesterton
2. Vislor Turlough
3. Wilf Mott
4. Jamie McCrimmon
5. Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart
6. Captain Jack Harkness
7. Steven Taylor
8. Ben Jackson
9. Rory Williams
10. Harry Sullivan
11. Mickey Smith
12. Adric
13. Sergeant John Benton
14. Captain Mike Yates
15. Adam Mitchell

So Ian is my favourite male companion, who's yours?

I always had a soft spot for Benton.

I'd go with Turlough.

Btw you missed Mickey off the list.

Jamie, Wilf, Cpt Jack, and Turlough. and I am loving Rory right now too, really love ian as well, oh and Harry!! And Who can forget the Brig!!!

While not necessarily favourite, I really do like Adric as well.

Turlough. There will never be a companion as good as him again as I doubt the BBC would let a companion go in that direction. I also like Captain Jack and would have liked to have seen more of Adam Mitchell

Give me till the end of this series because Rory might be at the top of my list by then.

Jamie, Wilf, Captain Jack and Rory. However that pony tail was awful. I hope they don't feel the need to kill off Rory. The show works better with 2 companions.

Well, for me it will still be Fitz Kreiner from the eighth Doctor books. But if I had to go for a TV companion, it'd be Jamie, with Ian and Benton in joint second place. Most of them have been pretty good though. Except Adam, of course (though I don't consider him a companion anyway).

Jack, totally without a doubt for me

Immortal eye-candy with a dark and mysterious past - irresistable

For me it has to be Ian because he basically does a lot of the stuff The Doctor does now. He was essentially a hero, especially at first when The Doctor was being very much the anti-hero. He had a few one-to-ones with the enemy(Koquillion), he was the one who convinced the Thals to fight against the Daleks in their first story, when it could easily have been The Doctor himself(especially in later incarnations), he even confronted The Doctor himself when he was misbehaving in The Edge Of Destruction. He was a good fighter and always one to crack a quick gag. He was also a scientist, I think he was The Doctor in disguise!

In fact I think William Russell could have been a good Doctor himself!

Jamie, Jack and Harry. Probably the most fun male companions of them all. And very good characters on their own too.

Honorary mention: Wilf and Brigadier!

Captain Jack is by far and away the greatest male companion and in fact is one the greatest characters full stop not just in DW but in anything. A brilliant creation perfectly realised by JB and there is not one moment he is on screen that I havent enjoyed.

Ian is top for me and I very much agree with Daveyboy's reasons. Then Jamie and Captain Jack joint second.

Turlough, not only one of the rare male companions but he also had a unique storyline too.
