Ok

I haven't listened to music radio for I don't know how long, probably 20 years or more.

I have gotten completely out of touch with current music which is fine - I have no problem with that.

But I do want something new ( to me at least, if not the millennium ) to get into and I want to find a radio station or programme that caters to my general tastes whilst giving me the chance to find new things.

I love / like to varying degrees : Leonard Cohen, Aimee Mann, Eddi Reader, Melanie Safka, Bob Dylan, Feist, Tears for Fears, Joni Mitchell, Madeleine Peyroux, Scott Walker, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, REM, Sting, Jennifer Warnes, Simon & Garfunkel, Ray Charles, Dusty Springfield, Tanita Tikaram, Steely Dan, Joan Baez, U2......

I hate R&B and I don't like heavy metal

I just want to know the best radio station to tune into.

Any suggestions would be welcome

My advice is to try Radio 2.

Although you probably won't find all the artists you list on the daytime playlist you should find something you like.

Happy listening.

Oh I don't expect to - that was just an idea of the sort of thing I am looking for. But I am actually looking for something new really

Radio 1 usually has variety depending on whos presenting.

Galaxy is just 100% RnB n Cheese which i can't stand.

I don't listen to that much music radio these days but when I do it's generally 6 Music - it has a good range of interesting new stuff and great older music. It's only available as a digital station (but can listen to it online.)

Shame the BBC plan to close it really!

Although you're not in the 'catchment' area for it, check out XFM (London, Manchester). It plays a variety of old and new music, mainly new music in the indie, alternative pop and rock scenes so it might suit your taste more than the likes of Radio 1 which will also play R&B, dance, pop etc...

www.xfm.co.uk

Online only outside of Manchester and London, of course.
