Too many gimmicks?
theaman

Do you think all these rumoured gimmcks will spoil the show?

Or will it improve it?

It all depends on the HMs

If they have good HMs gimmicks might provide a bit of interest and fun..

If the HMs are dull as ditchwater no amount of gimmicks will make any difference.............err, like last year

I hope they don't have too many gimicks this year.
The reward room last year was a bit of a damp squid.
The real question should be 'How much drink should they have this year?'
It seems the program only gets exciting if they're having a party with lots of drink.

I'm taking all the preshow tabloid rumours with a pinch of salt, for the dripfeeding publicity hype it is. Most of it comes from the Star and Sun, both of which have a scratch-each-other's back relationship with Endemol. After all it is in the tabs' self interest (sales boost), as much as Endemol's, for BB5 to be a success.

That said, I expect BB5 to be good this year. I think the reaction to the previous series always tend, in some way, to inform the behaviour of the housemates in the next. Thus in BB3 Jonny tried the cheeky-Northerner-with-heart-of-gold Craig card; Jade could be said to out-Helen Helen. In BB4 the lack of serious conflict and dullness I think was a response to BB3 (the public backlash against anyone perceived to be bitching).

Hence I think the contestants this year will strive to be "interesting" in response to the 'boring and forgotten' BB4. They will have learned the lesson, from all previous series, that memorability is the key to post-BB success. I just hope they won't make themselves interesting at the expense of being genuine.

Oh I don't know - I quite like watching them trying, ever more desperately, to keep up their 'interesting' facade

Good point.....

One thing I did notice last year was that the HMs had dropped all pretence that they had never seen the show, only applied for a laugh, their mates had sent the application in when they were all p*ssed etc, etc, etc

This had been one of the unwritten rules in previous series - that the HMs feigned ignorance of what it was all about

Last year - they were all 'savvy'............they knew what it was all about, they knew they were on audition for TV presenting jobs.......they even mentionned forums before the dreaded 'censor' went to chicken cam..............

So this year I expect that any potential HMs have been well saturated in BB history.......have been reading the forums at least since they got through the first auditions.........realise that they will not get to be a TV presenter by keeping their heads down to avoid nomination and tabloid condemnation...............recognise that they are competing not only with each other but with HMs from previous series...........be honest enough to know that the most they can hope for is a year or two in the public eye and the chance to make a million quid........and that they can only do that if they make an impression on the viewers.........good or bad...........the biggest sin is to keep your head down to avoid nomination............winning is irrelevant..........making an impression is all that counts.

Exactly. Who remembers PJ or Scott (to name but two such examples) ?

no one was more savy than johnny everyone local knew he watched bb1&2 avidly he knew exactly how he should act to appeal to certain veiwers i.e. jack the lad and looking sorry for himself when he was nominated, he still cant belive he never won and blamed the editing, anyone thinking adele got a hard time on the forums should of heard what he and his supporters had to say up here, we all think it was sour grapes because she sussed him out and said he was playing to the cameras, we all knew he was.

Hit the nail right on the head there I think Eusebius and swingaleg. I think our best chance of a good BB is that the HMs all know that they have to make an impression this year. The Scott option will be as inviting to them as the Jade/Adele one was to last year's mob. In trying to be all-round entertainers over a prolonged period we get to see who's who and what's what. If there's a promise of that this year I'll keep watching...

Oh yes, thats another thing I hope they do something about this year, the nominations.
If any of the HM's this year, give stupid or annoying reasons for voting for someone then they should be kicked out. No excuses.
Last year the nominations were poor.

Yes, I think Jonny did his homework on 'how to win BB'. And he almost succeeded.

Lets be honest if all the rumours for every BB was true it would have been a mess a long time ago.

I do wonder sometimes how much effort C4/€ndemol spend on 'leaking' or if it isn't them then when do the tabloids decide to start stirring things up. And who is the poor trainee who gets the job of coming up with them?

How many start on the web, there are various BB forums that run 12 months of the year and do they come from genuine BB fans or merely those who like to cause trouble.

The only thing I do know is that every rumour has to be taken with an enormous pinch of salt.

Look at the history of them

There is a transvestite in the house, BB2,3,4 and now 5

There is an asylum seeker in the house, BB5

There are two house, BB5

The number of HMs varies between 10 and now isn't there one saying there are 20 this year.

Just look at the rumours so far for this year and then see how many are true come Friday.

What Big Brother really needs is one big twist that affects the whole series, rather than small twists every week like BB4.

And hopefully any changes made will be intended for the long term (although if they don't work they'll obviously claim it was for "one series only")

Interesting quote on the BB Africa site from last year re: Big Brother in the UK
"In the UK, Channel 4's Chief Exec Mark Thompson has announced that Big Brother 5 is heading for TV screens next year – but only after a major facelift. The channel was reportedly disappointed with the performance of Big Brother 4, and changes will be made before the fifth season of the reality show airs in the UK in 2004.

Thompson and his team are keeping their guard up and their lips tight, and Thompson has only commented that, 'I can't tell you what's going to happen in Big Brother 5, but one thing you can be sure about is that it will be different from Big Brother 4.' "

If all those things published in The People are true, I think its too much. It may be alright for a week of punishment, but I think its too much all the way through.

If the contestants are exciting enough, then they will liven up the house without needing too many gimmicks.

Last years gimmicks didn't save the show, I think the emphasis is on the housemates that are chosen.

The rich side/poor side idea was panned at first - yet it was probably one of the most successful gimmick they have done yet.

Interesting to see Mark Thompson's quote.......not much of a help now he's at the BBC though!
