What to do for my Mum

Mum has has dogs all her life.
Last two were rescue greyhounds, both of whom were a delight. Poor. darling Madge (yes. I know) was put down last week.

Mum says she cannot afford another dog, but to me, a dog keeps her healthy with the walking and happy with the love.
Would it be too rude to offer to pay for vets fees etc? Or do you think at 68 my Mum maybe does not want the hassle.

Thank you for any input

I think it's a lovely thought but having a pet, especially a dog is a huge committment, as you no doubt know, and I think your Mum should be 100% sure she would be getting one for the right reasons. It might be a bit too soon for her at the moment after losing Madge.

By all means mention it, but maybe be aware that the financial costs are not the only deterrant for her at this time.

Maybe the OP's mum could volunteer to walk other people's dogs? Animals are great and I adore my cats, but there are some mornings when I think wouldn't it be lovely not to have to clean out the litter trays, clean up the cat litter off the floor, feed the cats and administer their meds before I can get my own breakfast! I'd wait a while before even mentioning the subject, to be honest.

You could sponsor a dog for her from here :

Helping the dog and your Mum without gving her all of the work involved. I know someone who does this and he actually gets to go and visit the dog and help out at events.

Nice of you to think of your Mum like this, I love dogs too but I would think very hard about taking on the responsibility, especially at your Mum's age.

I think that is a very generous and thoughtful offer. I agree though to maybe wait a while before broaching the subject.
Can you perhaps offer to help out in a more practical sense as well....ie to dog sit if your mother wants a holiday etc?
Also....at 68 your mum is NOT old at all ( OP! ) but maybe you could also offer a proviso to take on the dog your self if any health issues etc do arise as this may be a concern for your mother.
