It seems logical that after discussing the Male Companions in the other thread that we should redress the balance and talk about our favourite Female Companions!!!

There's too many to do a poll so I'm gonna tell you my top five and you can all say or tell everyone how you want!!

1)Peri-(For two obvious reasons and she was rather gorgeous)
2) Sarah Jane-Smith- One of the all time classic companions who is still around today.
3)Polly-She was so lovely and gorgeous!
4)Romana 1( Mary Tamn)Intelligent, Gorgeous, who could want more?
5) Rose-Best of the New Who Companions.

6) Mel, mature, stunning, good-looking, in great stories......oh look, there's a pig flying overhead! Hehehehehehe!!!!!!

Barbara and Liz: the only two sensible, mature, intelligent, grown-up, career women ever to cross the Tardis threshold.

It's arguable that Sarah, Martha and Donna may fit into that category, but Sarah was never treated as a grown-up; Martha was too mushy and swoony; and Donna never had a career!

Jo was nice; Romana 2 was several kinds of yum; Nyssa was lovely. I'm really liking Amy at the mo. Ginger girls are the best girls in the entire universe; it helps that she is incredibly pretty too

I always loved Sarah Jane and Romana II (I was too young for Romana I - I've only seen her in one story and while she was ok, I much preferred Lalla Ward). From the new series, I love Donna Noble, she was brilliant.

Will always be Sarah Jane for me. Love Romana I too.

Sarah Jane was decidedly 'grown up' when she was first introduced and an extremely capable one at that! I don't think if you look at her in stories like The Seeds of Doom, Dinosaur Invasion or Pyramids of Mars you can say she wasn't treated as a grown up...

I agree. SJS was grown-up. She was more 'girly' than Liz and Barbara, but that doesn't mean she couldn't be taken as an intelligent independent woman.

I'd actually say that most of the female companions Tom Baker had were pretty well rounded mature women. Both Romana's definitely were, and even Tegan knew her own mind. She liked to moan a lot.

Its the one thing that bugged me a bit when the series came back in 2005, in that practically every interview Billie did, Rose was hailed as a new more empowered female companion, the like of which DW had never seen before. I'm not saying she wasn't an empowered woman, but it was a bit dismissive of previous female companions lumping them all together as 'scream queens'.

Tegan was fun, I liked her. And I liked her contrast to Nyssa.

Dismissive and inaccurate. The only one who really fitted that description was Mel.

Currently I would say : -

and special shout outs to Cpt. Adelaide Brooke, Dr. Liz Shaw and Doctor Grace Holloway.

Especially as the last companion prior to that was the wonderful Ace who was far more the embodiment of intergalactic ass kicking fem-power than Rose who had occasional lapses into simpering love sick teen mode.

What short memorys they have.

ARRGHH! Its painful to even recall her.

The casting of Bonnie Langford actually drove me away from Doctor Who completely. My one single regret about my DW viewing is that I dismissed the McCoy era completely until I started getting the DVDs.

I'm not a big fan of Sophie Aldred's acting, and find the 'professor' thing annoying, but Ace was anything but a moronic screamer.

As we're talking about intelligent mature female companions, I have to give mention to Dr. Grace Holloway too. Stick that one up yer... Rose Tyler!

Ah yes, how could I forget the wonderful Grace! Like the Eighth Doctor, I'd so love for her to come back for just one more story. She was hot hot hot!

I like to think of Grace as having been the companion for both the 7th and 8th Doctors.

Sarah-jane, Nyssa, Victoria and Peri

Quite a few from Classic Who, most notably Barbara, Polly, Zoe, Liz, Sarah Jane, Romana II, Nyssa and Ace.

From Nu Who it has to be Donna. Amy needs to appeal to me (other than physically) a lot more in future episodes to topple Donna, although I certainly prefer her (Amy) to Martha and Rose (let's face it, I prefer a Slitheen's f@rt to Rose).

From the novels it's definitely Benny (aka Professor Bernice Summerfield).

From the audios I'd have to pick Lucie Miller.

My all-time favourite is without question the aforementioned Benny, although if I were to vote in a poll, which more than likely would not include Benny, I'd probably vote for Romana II.

That is technically true to a degree!!!!

I would have loved Margret Slitheen to have been a companion. Actually erase that thought, but Annette Badland would have been good.

Benny was wonderful, as was Lucie. Sadly, the arrival of River Song has probably destroyed any hope of ever seeing Benny in the TV show, but I still hope that one day Lucie turns up with the eighth Doctor.

Ah, but as River Song has said to the Doctor 'you don't know who I am yet...' Maybe she is Benny!
