Martha- she is beautiful, smart, independent woman with a career.
Sarah Jane- i mean, she even has her own tv show. Amy- because she is always ready for action among other things. Donna- was quite funny but i never thought she could handle much action :P nevertheless she was good also. that's what i like about them. i can't really talk about others because i've only seen the new version of the show. |

She does in one of the novels (which are canonical to some people, including myself, though not to others) in which she takes a trip with the Third Doctor and Jo Grant to early 20th Century Russia, where they encounter that mad, evil, randy holy man Rasputin. I'm not a huge Third Doctor fan, but thoroughly enjoyed this novel.
Hang on, didn't Tom Baker play Rasputin in Nicholas and Alexandra? Great casting! |

Barbara and Liz: the only two sensible, mature, intelligent, grown-up, career women ever to cross the Tardis threshold.
It's arguable that Sarah, Martha and Donna may fit into that category, but Sarah was never treated as a grown-up; Martha was too mushy and swoony; and Donna never had a career! |

Its the one thing that bugged me a bit when the series came back in 2005, in that practically every interview Billie did, Rose was hailed as a new more empowered female companion, the like of which DW had never seen before. I'm not saying she wasn't an empowered woman, but it was a bit dismissive of previous female companions lumping them all together as 'scream queens'.

Top Five ...
1) Ace 2) Romana I 3) Sarah Jane Smith ... can only do a top 3. I liked others but with less distinction.

Didn't RTD say something along the lines of "We had to say that" because the current press always liked to run with the joke of companions always falling and screaming?

I think I like most of them, but at a push, Ace. For New Who I would have to say Donna

Quite a few from Classic Who, most notably Barbara, Polly, Zoe, Liz, Sarah Jane, Romana II, Nyssa and Ace.
From Nu Who it has to be Donna. Amy needs to appeal to me (other than physically) a lot more in future episodes to topple Donna, although I certainly prefer her (Amy) to Martha and Rose (let's face it, I prefer a Slitheen's f@rt to Rose). From the novels it's definitely Benny (aka Professor Bernice Summerfield). From the audios I'd have to pick Lucie Miller. My all-time favourite is without question the aforementioned Benny, although if I were to vote in a poll, which more than likely would not include Benny, I'd probably vote for Romana II. Quote:
I agree. SJS was grown-up. She was more 'girly' than Liz and Barbara, but that doesn't mean she couldn't be taken as an intelligent independent woman.
I'd actually say that most of the female companions Tom Baker had were pretty well rounded mature women. Both Romana's definitely were, and even Tegan knew her own mind. She liked to moan a lot. ![]() Its the one thing that bugged me a bit when the series came back in 2005, in that practically every interview Billie did, Rose was hailed as a new more empowered female companion, the like of which DW had never seen before. She shines in most of the New Adventures books, but I'd recommend 'Sanctuary', 'Death & Diplomacy', 'Legacy', 'Happy Endings' and 'Return of the Living Dad', as well as the audio adventures she starred in.
Is that "Living Dad"? |

Thanks for that, I'll make a note of them. I've not read many of the novels, and I've only heard a few of the audio adventures on BBC 7. Can you give me a title or two I should look out for?

Here is a link to Benny's Wikipedia entry. She was in a large number of novels, most released in the 1990s, so not sure how easy they are to get hold of now.

Sarah Jane - she also had some brilliant stories.
Donna - like wise. Nyssa and Tegan - as a collective I really liked. them and the dynamic. Both Rose and Martha with the whole 'the Doctor is a dream-boat' thing were just annoying. Amy with the 'nice bod, why not' bit as shown in a couple of episodes is much better, though arguments for and against will continue for much time, I suspect. BTW, which male companion thread - I can't find it! |
