Martha- she is beautiful, smart, independent woman with a career.
Sarah Jane- i mean, she even has her own tv show.
Amy- because she is always ready for action among other things.
Donna- was quite funny but i never thought she could handle much action :P nevertheless she was good also.
that's what i like about them. i can't really talk about others because i've only seen the new version of the show.

I've read this one, wasn't it Jo who nearly had an extremely close encounter with Rasputin? I hadn't thought of the Freudian implication sof that!

Didn't RTD say something along the lines of "We had to say that" because the current press always liked to run with the joke of companions always falling and screaming?

Well he definitely did use Sarah Jane and Ace as his influences...so if he also had thought this was the first time that a feamle companion from the classic series was nothing more than a screamer....he would have used outside influnces...

She shines in most of the New Adventures books, but I'd recommend 'Sanctuary', 'Death & Diplomacy', 'Legacy', 'Happy Endings' and 'Return of the Living Dad', as well as the audio adventures she starred in.

Thanks for that, I'll make a note of them. I've not read many of the novels, and I've only heard a few of the audio adventures on BBC 7. Can you give me a title or two I should look out for?

I rather like Paul Cornell's "No Future" where Benny joins a punk band in an alternative 1977 London (and the Doctor once again meets the Meddling Monk, who seems to have swapped his habit for a business suit).

Here is a link to Benny's Wikipedia entry. She was in a large number of novels, most released in the 1990s, so not sure how easy they are to get hold of now.

Nyssa and Tegan - as a collective I really liked. them and the dynamic.
Both Rose and Martha with the whole 'the Doctor is a dream-boat' thing were just annoying. Amy with the 'nice bod, why not' bit as shown in a couple of episodes is much better, though arguments for and against will continue for much time, I suspect.
