Didn't RTD say something along the lines of "We had to say that" because the current press always liked to run with the joke of companions always falling and screaming?
I'm not sure what RTD said himself, but as he was a DW fan, I can't imagine he would have been dismissive about previous female companions. I meant more from the point that interviewers always categorizing companions as 'falling and screaming'.

Yep he definitely wouldn't be so dismissive of the old companions like that, considering rose was based between a mix of Ace and SJS.

ClassicWho: Only can Romana and SJS so they must have been the only ones that made an impression as a child

NuWho: Donna

NunuWho Meera Syal's character, can't remember her name. I saw a connection between her and Doc11 which has been missing with Amy

I would not mind at all if I was locked in Castle Anthrax (see Holy Grail) with almost every one of the female companions and had to administer spankings on a daily basis. In fact that would make me a very happy man indeed.

Top two would be Sarah-Jane and Romana II

Amy is probably my favourite of the new ones.

Sarah Jane Smith and Jo Grant were the only ones who left a lasting impression from the old series.

From new Who, Amy, Donna and Martha in that order.

River Song can fly the Tardis so maybe she counts as a companion. She's one of my favourite characters.
