Can anyone tell me please, does the new black BT Vision box do anything that the original silver one doesn't do?

No, it doesn't. It runs a little bit quicker, and so it's a little nicer to use, but it has no other features that the silver one doesn't.

The black box is also missing the RF out socket, so if you aren't using the scart or hdmi then its not for you

Certainly a nicer looking box though.

Thankyou very much for your replies. I have been watching on ebay and the newer black boxes seem to be selling for considerably more than the silver ones, so I wondered what else they had to offer.
As my daughters tele is silver in her bedroom, I'll go for the silver one now. Thankyou again!

I would advise against buying a box from ebay.

you will need a BT vision account AND broadband from BT.

also BT will not authorize used boxes from ebay.

so you will be wasting your money on a doorstop.

Is this correct? Having just rejoined BTV after a year over on the dark side I was looking to get a black box for no other reason than to match all the other gear in the room.

AFAIK it's just the line that gets enabled for BT Vision, not the box. I have a box from ebay that works fine, although the line was already enabled for my original box.

its ok IF you were a previous BT vision customer. since they think you still have the same box. If you are a new customer then they will not enable BT vision.

As it stands all silver boxes are gone now anyway. when I ordered a new remote they told me the only one i can have is black.

WRONG

I purchased my BT vision box at a car boot sale on Sunday.
Rang BT Monday morning, they agreed straight away to a no cost PPV account on my broadband, to be setup for Wednesday.

Today Wednesday - everything up and running.

This is despite a Freeview coverage report that said no coverage at my postcode. They simply took my word that I had sufficient Freeview for it to be worthwhile (just 12 channels)

I can also confirm they enabled a line for me. Bought a box from ebay, told them i had got it from someone that had recently cancelled and was lookingto try it out before i signed up.

Hey no need to shout at me. For a start I am not wrong, the information I had was based on what others and BT have said themselves. Maybe it's changed since but I was pretty sure you had to get the box from BT.

Can one of the BT staff who post here clarify this please? I also remember wwwebber saying the same thing also you going to bite his head off too?

Jeez

You are wrong, and I am the proof. Whats more others agree with me.

If you make bald definitive statements without caveats that are totally incorrect you should expect to be corrected and probably with vigor, particularly when you are going to cost somebody money by your mistake.

I may be new to this forum but I have many thousands of posts and years of experience on other fora.

No Stuntmaster was not wrong. If, as you say you have thousands of posts elsewhere, experience would have told you to check back through previous posts on this forum, which is new to you. Before making bald definitive statements.

I have been using this forum since Vision's release and a user as well. Well before my current join date. Previously, BT would not have agreed to what you have now achieved. The Vision forum is littered with disgruntled people who have tried to buy Vision boxes from 3rd parties, only to be disappointed.

You have been successful, great, up until now nobody had said they had been. May be BT have changed there protocols. Or you got lucky.

I was not going to get involved in this with third parties but for your information I contacted BT a little over a month ago to check the situation and was told there was no problem with using second hand boxes provided you were an existing BT Broadband customer. I was informed by them the policy changed when they started to charge for boxes on the Zero cost PPV account.

This was before the lady posted her negative information,

That is why I risked the purchase at the car boot.

She may not have realised she was wrong but she was and is now. If I had realized I was dealing with an eggshell personality I migh have been less forceful, but she made a definitive statement that was wrong without any caveats.

Too many people make bald definitive statements without the facts, if they put the appropriate caveats with comments then we would know how much weight to give them. I only say something is or is not id I actually know it to be the case, i.e. done it myself or witnessed it elsewhere. If I am reporting someone else's experience I will say I beleive or I think or according to ...

Perhaps others should try the same thing.

Well, I thought you steamed in like a bull in a china shop which was not appropriate here. A simple "I'm afraid you are mistaken" would have sufficed but unfortunately you decided otherwise which was always only going to put someones nose out of joint.

You then go on to try and justify it which I think is bit silly

Bull in a china shop is a bit mild - However I do stand by my comments.
I do get carried away when people make definitive statements that are wrong and could potentially cost people money.

Wait till I round on some idiot who posts something like ...

Only idiots use Fleabay they are all scammers and rogues who peddle worthless rubbish.

Just to clarify I am a buyer not a seller on eBay with well over 1000 trades and only a couple of dubious ones.

You do and if you are a NEW customer as stated in my earlier post BT will NOT honour it! if you were an ex vision customer or already been with BT then you are OK as I stated previously!

You are quite full of it to be honest. As a new member, with that kind of attitude it won't be long before you are warned by DS. You wont round on me thats a fact so stop threatening everyone this is not the place for it.

I try to help as many people on here as I can. I research my information before hand and my reliable source was based on what fellow DS users had reported and the fact that the BT site does not mention anywhere that you can use an ebay box. it infact charges you for a new box. An existing memeber would ring up to get vision added.

It is bad enough with Azimo spouting trout, Matterhorn taking the upper class view 24/7, and now you who has used the service for 1 month over my 1 and a half years.... Not saying you are wrong but you arn't fully correct either.

Finally, who are you to tell me how I should type and reply on DS? what are you the sodding headmaster?

so this is what Ds has turned into.... sad shame, when i started we all try to get along, now it's all 1upmanship all the time. I'm right you wrong. la ta la da, like flipping school kids jeez.
