To mime or not to mime
I've seen a lot of people on here say that they love an artists music yet when they sing live they sound crap. I've also read a lot of comments saying that they don't mind their favourite acts miming as long as the "show" is visually gratifying.
Personally if I pay to go and see an act I expect them to sing and not mime. I could care less about the spectacle, although should they put on a spectacle then great. There are benefits to miming especially when artists go on tours, a lot of them come back with shot vocals as a result of constantly giving it their all. Whilst on the other hand a lot of acts can go a long way as result of miming because they know that they don't have to put in the effort as the studio version is going to be cleared up with the help of auto-tune etc. So would you feel cheated if you were to go to a gig and find the artist miming, or would you not mind if the "show" was visually spectacular? |

I'd be really disapointed if somebody I had paid to see live, wasn't live...that's the whole point of being a singer, surely? It's the reason I'd never see Britney Spears live.

if artists are performing then it should be made the law that they sing LIVE. infact i dont even mind abit of half and half, some miming and some singing during one song, as long as atleast 50% of it is sung live. otherwise you may aswell just sit back and watch the music video!

If a singer can't sing and has to rely on miming, surely that is an indication that they shouldnt be a singer in the first place.
And as someone else on here said a while ago (cant remember who it was), you wouldnt go to work and pretend to do your job. Which is essentially what miming is. |

Totally agree if they mime on stage they're a FAKE like Britney Spears. if you pay good money to see an artist they should SING not mime and prance around in their underwear and make 20 costume changes. But it seems now that people want visual and costume changes. Why? A concert is excatly that it's for singing not to see how many times you can change outfits and NOT sing. Each time they change their outfit is more time not on stage singing. People who pay for a mime and costume change act really are being ripped off.

Its a right load of tosh. The excuse that they have alot of phsysical routines to do is ridiculous, they should try doing a 2 hour set of metal music, thats hard work! The artists that mime do so to mask the fact that they are substandard singers.

Just listened to Florence and the Machine murder "you've got the love" even with the help of backing singers and a 50 voice choir - Mime for god's sake

I think they should sing live and have live music.
If they can't do that then they shouldn't be in the business. |

it depends entirely on the artist and the show your going to!
Britney's Circus Tour was brilliant, great to see her back even though not everything was live she was in a happy place and she was where she wanted to be for sure, and it was a spectacle! and thoroughly entertaining! also i have grown up with her so it's that connection. Madonna's i FINALLY saw live last year in the O2! and she managed to pull song after song live! and with that choreography and stage sets t's so impressive! (wish i could have seen all her tours live but i am only 18 so i would have needed a TARDIS!) plus she had a connection and pulled eveyone in for the experience of the show! rock bands you go to see live, be it legends like The Stones reuinion or U2 or for newer more Indie groups, you want to see and hear them really go for it! so overall it depends there's no right or wrong some have preferences and others don't if they mime or lip synch sometimes it is better than hearing songs being murdered (WHITNEY!!!!) when live or with a vocal accompanyment! so it depends on what you are looking for, but at the end of the day i go for who i WANT to see and go open minded (also not forgetting that Britney had a major breakdown which was publicised across the globe! it's not easy going back to what you did when you were 17,21 or 23! but she's back so that's the main thing) |

Have you ever been to the Theatre? West End, Broadway?
Performers in these shows sing live EVERY night, and dance at the same time. They do it every day and twice on Saturday. Makes the likes of Cheryl Cole look positively feeble. Why is it poptarts, get paid huge sums of money to fake sing? Why can we not pay the people with real talent that kind of money? |

I agree a lot with Josh above, also depends on the situation. If somebody had a throat infection, I'd rather they mimed than risked damaging their voice long term. Sometimes you simply can't pull out of a show. Quote:

Not to mention the fact there's usually understudies & on hand vocal coaches/musical directors. I'm not too sure it'd go down well if Britney Spears had Jessica Simpson on hand to to step in. It's a different art really. |

I don't mind miming.
But I would prefer them to sing live. If they can do both - sing live & perform - at the same time. & do it well. Someone mention Britney - her past shows have been the performance ie. where she was just going crazy, the dancing, the energy was amazing now, she doesn't have that. Therefore she could have sung live on the Circus tour. At least 'Everytime' anyway. She was on an umbrella... The dancers did more than her. Sadly. I saw the Pussycat Dolls. The show was great. Nicole sounded great. The other four just danced, their mics were off, I'm sure of it. I've seen Westlife a few times. I cannot believe how much they mime. Alicia Keys, I believe almost 100% of her show was sung live. & she was fantastic. But someone like her can't do a show like Britney. It's just her, a piano & her voice. & that's enough. You just want to hear her sing. So I guess it depends on the act. |

A singer's job is to sing - if they can't do that they're in the wrong business. I agree with the person who said about any of us going to work and pretending to do their job!
Besides, there are plenty of artists who manage to sing live AND put on a really good show... Mika, Jamiroquai and Scissor Sisters spring to mind. Take That's Circus tour last year was really spectacular but they still managed to sing live! |

I wouldn't pay to see music, I'd pay to hear it and it's much more rewarding live. To each their own though I guess.

Depends on the act, I get slightly annoyed when I see other artists apart from britney miming on tour though - not because I mind they are miming - just because Britney gets absoloutly slaughtered for it and no other artists do.

EXACTLY
![]() I hate it, Britney has mimed since her debut 'apart from some performances' and 'one off's' i dont care anyway cause Britney puts on a great show and performance ![]() she did an acoustic set on oprah in 2001 and sounded so beautiful there, and Toxic live on Ellen in 2004, i mean she has more than proven a lot of the time, but it's also the spectacle of it that brings the fans forward too! i mean Beyonce wouldn't dare do several things Britney does on tour! let alone be dangled in the air over a circle of fire! which i loved!the thing that separates everything is that each performer has a different audience, the people that should ciriticise are the fans themselves. i mean i read that Elton John criticised Madonna lip synching when she used a vocoder microphone for Vogue and Nobody Knows Me and the rest of the Re-Invention tour was totally live...i mean if it wasn't live i dont think she'd dare perform it, which is another reason why i love her so much really! if she aint confident with how to perform it CHOP! wished i'd seen her Confessions Tour Live though in 2006 but so glad i saw Sticky And Sweet, i mean her uptempo songs and her ballads were all live! also when she suffered throat problems on her Asian leg of her Blond Ambition tour in 1990 and continued live a few days after recovery and added dates on! sometimes haters just try to find what they can against legendary performers through spite or jealousy or for whatever reason, yet when other don't or do perform live vocals they imply they cannot sing or they should do more or why are they in the business etc.etc.etc. i am just so sick of it!! their fans see them for different reasons entirely, i mean Michael Jackson i am sure may have relied a lot on backing vocals..but who cares he is The King Of Pop and many see him for the spectacle element and may he RIP. but if he did perform there may be critics then too! at the end of the day it's the show that matters, and i personally would prefer to see Britney strut herself with all the flare and gusto than Take That anyday! live or not. P!nk and Alicia Keys also have more limited and stripped down sets for their tours. P!nk did a trapeze act but that was all in terms of airbound stunts really, beautiful yes and very ambitious but the rest was a lot of her strutting around too, no one criticises that (i like her though) Rihanna does so much, i saw her Radio One performance and she is amazing!! yet some criticise and comment...oh! she can't sing a note! and whatever. it's just so boring to have those comments, she had the energy, presence and sheer elegance with her live sets and had so much creativity in her projection to the crowds. besides, i'd rather RiRi over Bey or Gaga anyday live! as she has that surrealty and confidence that is so appealing to me more so than some others. at the end of the day, everyone has their own preferences and choices and if they don't like it then it AINT FOR YOU!! this year i am going to see Christina Aguilera's tour i hope when her tickets go out! and expect something truely out there and the rest is extra! also going to save up for Madge's next world tour to and would love to see a Florence concert or if Rihanna comes back to the UK go and see her too!would have loved to see a 'Stones concert too ![]() everyone has a different key purpose for each fanbase, i mean Whitney has come under scrutiny for her live singing not being what it use to be!! how rediculous, i mean i am not a fan as such but seriously!! i wouldnt expect them to be 1988 or 1994 standard after all she's been through in true honestly!! some people. |

oh lord.... no its not ok unless its MY fav artist doing it... also the assumption by some fans that there are 'haters' is utter nonsense. the only 'hating' we do is for bad artistry REGARDLESS of who they are. any singer who cannot perform live is a fraud, but throw a few special effects into the 'performance' and it feeds the easily con .... erm, pleased fans of because the artist knows they can get away with anything once theyve established a faithful fan base.
