The thing is. She sang the rest of the song perfectly until that last note which was much higher than the original.
It seemed to me like she took a chance to impress and unfortunately it didn't quite work out!
Good luck to her though, I'm sure she'll go far!
I think we can all appreciate that Lauren had a bloody difficult song,and she just about made the last note.
As someone said on Lauren's Thread,it probably went well in rehearsal.I doubt that any of the other girls could have reached it.
ALW knows what she can do.He gave her that song,he had no worries.We are talking about such a short time span to be able to get it right.Even top performers have trouble with such high notes.

Yeah she didn't quite hit it but full marks for trying! Best vocals of OTR from any departing Dorothy, but you would expect that from Lauren though

some people on here clearly never regularly listen to opera. i was practically raised on opera and that was a proper soprano note. it only slightly wavered as i said before because she span around. if she stood solid on the ground which anyone trying to pull that top note off should do it would of sounded better to an untrained ear. but believe me it was fine.

Perhaps your hearing was damaged by all that early exposure to opera? The girl took a punt but it didn't work well; she was using vibrato all over the note, in a desperate attempt to hold on, which her singing teacher would tell her is just plain wrong. (B flat isn't actually extraordinarily high for a trained soprano - many can hit a serviceable D. It just seemed dog whistley because she had been in her chest register for most of the song and didn't have the ability to make the bottom of her range match the top in quality).

i disagree. not going to argue though. either way none of the other girls would of got anywhere close to that note.

I agree with all of this. She's very talented she's just not right for Dorothy.
Lauren would be good for Eliza Doolittle, she's got the Audrey Hepburn slimness and sleekness, and could do the 'rain in Spain' stuff really well, too. She wasn't my cup of tea for Dorothy, and that last note tonight did seem a tad ear-splitting, but the rest of the song was brilliant, she suited it so well.

i was just pointing out that laurens vocal ability is superior, nothing more.
on the last note thing again...listened to it again...yes it could have been executed better certainly and I do take some of cantank's points about just hanging on to it. but she did get to that note. that's the thing. plus we've got to take in to consideration the nerves and emotion of being live in the final. the judges and ALW all thought it was great though.

I have no idea whether she nailed the note or not, but when she did it I cringed as I really did not think it sounded nice. Perhaps it came as a shock because we weren't expecting it. My rabbit flattened his ears as if trying to block out the sound (but he does that when the phone rings too).

I understand what you mean about not expecting it. I thought it was unexpected and it made me cringe too!
It's a shame though because the rest of the song was flawless!

I was not only "practically raised" on opera, I trained as an operatic soprano: and that note was very ill-advised. I agree that it would have sounded better if she'd been standing still, and that's a very good reason why she shouldn't have done it. As it was, it sounded a mess. A shame, because she'd sounded good (if over-mature) throughout the rest of the song.

yeah i think it was the moving around that affected it. i don't think it was 'a mess' though. not bad for someone like her that hasn't been trained as an operatic soprano though aye!
plus i think what sheila said about it being full of joy is true too. i don't think she was too concerned about getting the note spot on...just put her heart into it and gave it pure energized emotion. you could see it in her face afterwards.
I listened to it again and I really do think it was because it was so unexpected that there were more than a few negative reactions on here. She wobbles a bit and struggles to hold it til the end, but it really was nowhere near as bad as claimed.
Shame some didn't like it though, the rest was flawless.

If she hadn't attempted it - ie if she had sung the last two notes the same, as it is usually done - the whole performance would probably have been a triumph for her. Aside from the fact that she didn't pull it off (the last note, that is), I am of the opinion, which I have expressed here before in relation to L Lewis and M Carey, that just because you can, that doesn't mean you should. In other words, even if you can hit those ridiculously high notes that only dogs can hear, if it doesn't sound good - and it doesn't - why do it? In short, going for that high note was ambitious, but it wasn't a good idea, and it may have spoiled Lauren's chances of winning. Still, she will do OK out of this, of that I have no doubt.

I've never heard a note like it in any opera, ever. It was a really horrid sound.
Lauren was always my favourite, right up to last week, when Danielle edged it for me. I think she shows warmth, emotion, great voice and good stage presence and she'll go far; but she should go far away from notes like that.

Definately!! I think she was actually a stronger contestant than both Sophie and Danielle but she didn't look right for Dorothy - not childish enough; and when I saw her sing I Could Have Danced All Night I was thinking she'd be the perfect Eliza.
I think the Theatre Royal on Drury Lane (the last place MFL was on in the West End is home to another one of ALW's shows now - might be Oliver...
The pitch wasn't particularly bad - certainly not a semi-tone or even a quarter-tone out but it did waver and the tone was rather unpleasant. Over the rainbow on the other hand was fantastic - head and shoulders above Danielle and Sophie, who, in my opinion didn't do a particularly good job of it.

hmmm i didn't really say that she was an actual opera singer to be fair though did i?
let me explain it this way. i know a lot of people that when they hear an opera singer sing they think it sounds awful and out of tune. I was basically saying in my comment which you quoted that some people just don't 'get' opera style singing and so instantly think the singer has sung it wrong.
i really do think some people are making it out to be a lot worse than it was. it wasn't perfect, ok. but it was as ALW pointed out, a soprano voice. he was basically saying that she has potential with that and bring that out in her vocal performances. everyone has a different opinion. you say it sounded horrid, charlotte church said it sounded beautiful. i think it could of been better (and probably was in rehearsals)..but well gutsy of her to go for it...and it shows potential. she's clearly got an incredible range.
