Is there a reason, budgetary or otherwise, why this couldn't happen?

I'd really like to know, if anyone can tell me.

I think in most episodes an hour would be better than 45 mins.

It would require extra editing, because you'd have to ensure that both versions a) made sense and b) were consistent.
Not impossible, but difficult if you do the story arc, because referencing previous events requires them to exist in both versions (it sounds easy but it is the sort of thing that can screw up).

Certainly the BBC has done this with some shows, such as Spooks. Even if done successfully you then end up with annoyed feedback from the overseas audience who missed something. Though of course it does help in that you can then sell uncut DVD's to the same market.

Well, look at it this way.

In a 45 min you actually get about 42 min of footage, after you take out titles, last week, next week and credits.

Of that usually you get something like

Teaser 5 mins
Setup 25
Resolution 10
End scene 2

If you have 60 then again you will actually have something like 57

say
Teaser 8 mins
Setup 35
Resolution 12
End scene 2

Special effects are expensive, as are stunts and location filming (because of things like weather, lighting, closing roads, etc).
So the most likely expansion is going to be more dialogue, probably on set. We've already had complaints that this or that episode seemed 'slow'.

Personally I would think it a good idea to make longer episodes (or as an alternative, to make more 2 parters) - as someone said elsewhere a 2x45 is similar to the old 4x25 format.

The one off episode is all a little too predictable, and somewhat like Star Trek - if you know the way that US ad breaks are timed you can set your watch by them!

Thanks for both replies. Yes, that makes sense.
