The ASDA Enigma

Was planning on a trip to ASDA this afternoon to treat myself to a DVD player. If memory serves they have a choice of Pacific, Dual and Toshia, varying from £30 to £80.

My Yamada is struggling with region 1 discs - strange frame delays or uneasy movement. Any advice on ASDA's selection - good picture, multi-region, etc.

Thanks

I would have thought the problem with your Yamaha is to do with the conversion from NTSC to PAL, and is unlikely to be cured by a new player..

I agree with Pingu, it could well be that as it has NTSC-PAL could be dodgy.
Doubt it'd be the player. Maybe try that specifc DVD on another player.

Thanks for this. Ive tried the region 1 discs on a Samsung 709 and they appear ok. The Yamada is mostly a decent machine - a few hiccups with frame freezing, but the pause button pushed a few times tends to clear this up.

Any suggestions though on ASDA's range at the moment?

If you do a search on 'pacific' in this forum you'll see quite a few threads discussing the cheaper DVD players. Not many fing anything wrong with the two Pacific machines.

Yep! heard very good reports on the Pacific players - a friend has one, he's very impressed with it - and he's quite fussy when it comes to electrical equipment.

Also - if you have a 'Somerfield' shop nearby - they do a machine for £30 (sorry can't remember the make). My mother finally decided to get herself a DVD player, and bought one. I took a selection of disks to her place to try it out:-
An original, region 2 DVD
A region 1 DVD
A copied DVD
A VCD
An SVCD
An mp3 disk
And an ISO disk with a mix of holiday snaps (JPG) & MPEG movie clips

It played the lot, no problems - excellent versatility for a £30 machine!!!

The £30 quid machines in Somerfield are Akura. Also on sale in Kwik Save.My brother has just bought one and it seems a good machine for the money.
