Does HMI switch automatically like scart?
And can the optical cable be dumped when using5.1 surround?

If not , why not?

HDMI switching can work if the devices it connects to support the feature and again 5.1 over HDMI is possible if the devices supports it, everything depends upon what two devices you are using which you don't specify

Specifically Sky+HD does not support 5.1 over HDMI so you need the optical (or coaxial for most boxes) if you have that.

There are fair few priority switches, I've used them successfully.SkyHD is about the only modern device which does not do 5.1/DD over HDMI. They'd be inundated with support calls if they allowed it, and sthe boxes don't do HD audio, there's no actual need for t.

My Panasonic plasma has an option in the menus, just need to switch it on, works fine with my Fortec Star HD receiver.

Just because the player supports it does not always mean it will work.

Sky HD ,V+ and the early PS3 consoles do not support HDMI auto switching so you need a tv that can do it regardless.

Panasonic tv's that have 2 or 3 HDMI inputs will require these devices without HDMI control to be connected to the HDMI1 input and it works that way so hopefully tv's of other makes are just as clever.

On my Panasonic tv the auto switching works on input 1 for everything but on inputs 2 and 3 only devices with an option for HDMI control will work and that applies to my Panny Bluray player , Pioneer dvd recorder and PS3 Slim.

Even if you link the devices using Viera link the auto switching will only work as above.
